Don’t Step on the Crack! — Colin McNaughton

We’ve all heard, “Don’t step on the crack or you’ll break your mother’s back,” right? How much truth is there to that saying, or to any superstitious aphorism? This children’s picture book by author and illustrator Colin McNaughton points out just how silly some superstitions can be. Somewhere in this world, there is a crack in the sidewalk, a certain, special crack, and if you step on it, terrible things will happen. You could slip on a banana peel. Or you could turn into a pig. (No, really, you could! It’s entirely possible!) Or maybe a big pack of bullies … Continue reading

Wedding Traditions, Symbolism & Superstition

Weddings are fun. Or they should be. We’ve talked about wedding superstitions before, but did you know that many parts of the actual ceremony and the set up are directly related to historical ideals and superstitions? For example, did you know: Traditionally, a groom would kidnap his bride and hold her with his left arm? This would keep his right arm and sword arm free to battle other suitors. Today, modern brides walk down the aisle to join their groom, but they still stand on the groom’s left Marriages and weddings were a diplomatic means of ending strife between two … Continue reading

Are You A Superstitious Traveler?

Do you allow your fear of the numbers 13 and 666, black cats, and broken mirrors influence your travel plans? If you answered yes, you’re not alone. The Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute estimates that about $800 million is lost in business every Friday the 13th because people refuse to fly and conduct business as they normally would. Some people have friggatriskaidekaphobia. That is, they fear the number 13. Have you ever been in a building like a hotel … Continue reading

June 6, 06 – Just Another Day?

June 6, 2006 is quickly approaching and many people are freaking out about it. There are prophets who believe this day is ominous. After all, it will be 06/06/06 and “666” is the mark of the antichrist. People have always been curious about numbers and what affect they might have on our lives. How many of us dread it when we see a Friday the 13th coming up on the calendar? Some hospitals and hotels do not have 13th floors but instead skip from the 12th to the 14th. Now in my mind, that still technically makes the “14th” floor … Continue reading
