Emily’s Art – Peter Catalanatto

Emily loves to paint. She’s good at mixing shades, and at putting colors side by side in such a way that they don’t run into each other. Her paintings are special, too – she doesn’t just paint what she sees, but what she perceives. In a picture of her family, she put four mommies – not that she really has four mommies, but her mom is so busy, it seems like she’s everywhere at once. Art feels like a part of who Emily is. When the announcement is made at school that an art contest will be held, Emily gets … Continue reading

Feeling Inadequate

Do you ever feel this way? I sure do. I find myself analyzing various aspects of my life and looking at how my abilities measure up to those of others. I know it’s not a healthy thing to do because I will never measure up in every area. There are some who have been given talents that others haven’t. There are those who were born “beautiful”, and those who weren’t. It seems some people receive unfair advantages while others struggle to make it. No one said life was fair. There are times when I wish I was a better wife … Continue reading

What Have You Done With Your Talents?

You might recall in Matthew 25:14-30 the parable of the talents. Basically, Jesus compared the kingdom of heaven to the traveling man who gave talents to his servants (my understanding a talent in today’s time is approximately $1000 in USD). The man gave the first man 5 talents, to the second he gave 2, and to the third he gave 1. None got the same because their abilities were different. Then he left. So the first and the second servants invested the talents and doubled the investment! The servant that received one talent went and buried it out of the … Continue reading

Your Child Could be BOTH Gifted and Learning Disabled

Is your child bright and intelligent, yet still struggles in school? Are you often amazed at your child’s creativity and talents, but can’t figure out why certain things aren’t getting through academically? It’s not often understood that a person can be both gifted and learning disabled. We assume that a child who is gifted has no learning challenges, and a child with ADHD or a specific learning disability is “slow.” It’s hard to imagine that both conditions could exist at the same time. But they can. The classification is “Gifted and Talented/Learning Disabled” or “GT/LD.” These children require a whole … Continue reading

Ten Signs that Your Child May be Gifted

Gifted and creative children often have behavioral problems in school which resemble ADHD, ODD, or other disorders. Sadly, many of these children are reprimanded, medicated, and denied the ability to reach their full potential. When this happens, our entire society suffers. Imagine if Einstein, Churchill, Edison, and other great thinkers who struggled in school were held back and forced to be ordinary. What if we had labeled them as slow learners and medicated them? How might the world be different today? I wonder why we assume children who misbehave are unintelligent. For some reason we’ve adopted this thinking in the … Continue reading

Could Your Child Win a Photo Contest?

As parents we all think we have the cutest, most talented children alive, at least I know I do. You are sure that if just discovered your child’s picture could be gracing the cover of a magazine or smiling back at you from the T.V. screen. But unless you live on the West or East Coast it is difficult to get your child discovered. You might be wondering how you can get your child recognized. One way is through the website The Cute Kid.com. Their theme is “Smile. Snap. Show the World.” The Cute Kid.com is a website that allows … Continue reading
