The Best of George Carlin

Michele just wrote a blog of George Carlin’s life, but I feel that he was such a big part of pop culture for so long (5 decades!), that Families could stand two blogs. George and I had very little in common – he was a hippie type who liked to rag on the government and the president. I am a Republican yuppie who strongly supports most things our government does. However, somewhere in between, we found a common ground and more times than not, George had me laughing so hard, I cried. Like him or not, the world truly lost … Continue reading

Juicy Hollywood Tidbits – July 24, 2007

Jon Lovitz Warns Andy Dick You probably know of Andy Dick’s woes with drugs. Apparently, that helped to ruin his friendship with Jon Lovitz. Last week at the Hollywood comedy club The Laugh Factory, Lovitz and Dick clashed and it was anything but funny. The two had a falling out over 10 years ago when Lovitz accused Dick of introducing mutual pal Phil Hartman’s wife to cocaine again. It was only a few months later that she killed Phil then shot herself. Lovitz said that a year ago, Dick threatened his life in a restaurant, saying, “I put the Phil … Continue reading

Andy Dick – How Much Is Too Much?

Some of the greatest comic geniuses are often troubled people. Many of them needed the attention comedy gave them to make up for something else they lacked in their childhoods. Many have turned to alcohol and drugs to help silence their demons. So what is up with Andy Dick? I must admit, sometimes I do find him quite funny. But, most of the time, he is so over the top; it is more uncomfortable than funny to watch him. Case in point – he was recently forcibly removed from the “Jimmy Kimmel Live” show. He was on the same night … Continue reading

A Quieter Divorce: Chris Rock

Britney, Britney, Britney – her name has been in every headline for the past 24 hours since she filed for divorce. Britney finally decided to kick K-Fed (now Fed-Ex) to the curb. Are any of us really surprised? Even though I thought they were a terrible couple, I was still somewhat shocked by the annoucement. I dutifully read the tabloids each week and they have been running stories on Britney and Kevin breaking up since they got together. But still, it was a surprise to know the tabloids were right, at least for once. Another celebrity divorce you may not … Continue reading

The End of the Road for Three SNL Veterans

I always worry when Saturday Night Live makes changes to the cast. I have watched Saturday Night Live from the beginning. Even thought I was only 12, I could appreciate the humor of great comedians like John Belushi, Bill Murray, and Dan Aykroyd. So I remember the bad years, the really, really bad years when Saturday Night Live went from being one of the smartest shows on television to a big, unfunny joke. It was so unfunny at times, that people were tuning out in droves. Then, they rebuilt it with talent. Right now, I think this cast is as … Continue reading

Comic Relief Returns

If you have been missing Comic Relief, you will be glad to know it is returning! The three original comedian hosts – Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, and Robin Williams – will return on November 18th to resurrect their fundraising comedy concert. This is the first time in almost eight years the three have gotten together and this time, the money will go to victims of Hurricane Katrina, including both humans and the animals displaced because of the storm. Due to many factors including lack of housing and jobs, a year after the storm, the New Orleans population is estimated to … Continue reading

Safe Environments Away from Home

Environments, outside of the home should be safe places for children to learn, interact and play. It is important that these venues have age appropriate rules and clear consequences for not following the rules. The primary place that most children spend outside of the home beginning at age 5 through 18 is school. This blog will focus on this asset as it relates to school. These tips might be helpful to parents, educators and children. Schools need to have a clear written set of rules and policies such as a code of conduct that should be reviewed with teachers, students … Continue reading
