More Lessons from My Mother

In my last blog entry, I recounted a few of the things I’ve learned from my fabulous mom. I’ve learned so much, though, that I felt I needed to add a few more that have shaped my LDS views on motherhood, selflessness, and church service. I learned how to be a mother from Mom (skills that I’ll soon be using). I learned what nurturing is at the hand of my mother. She’s the glue that makes our family function and every member feel fulfilled and loved. As the second oldest child of seven (and the oldest at home from age … Continue reading

New Duty to God Program

Every once in a while, the church changes and updates their programs to better serve the needs of the members. I personally love how these programs, while the same in purpose and desired outcome, adapt to use new technologies and relevant goals to strengthen and uplift our youth. I also love how the changes to this program involve the family. According to the Questions and Answers section on LDS.org, the program “provides opportunities for parents and leaders to strengthen relationships with young men” and can “easily be integrated into family home evening and quorum meetings and activities.” Families are a … Continue reading

Who I Am—An Introduction

Who is Lisa Mabey? On the surface, I’m a new blogger for the LDS Families and Photography blogs. I’m a soon-to-be LDS mom and wife. I’m a young women first counselor. But a little deeper, I’m an intently religious woman who values her convictions and testimony above anything else in life. I grew up in a tiny town in Idaho where I was surrounded by people who shared my faith and taught me through their examples. I grew up in a home that many people have envied for the love and truths taught there. I moved to Utah to attend … Continue reading

Maintaining Personal Worthiness

As LDS people it is important to focus on personal worthiness daily. These habits and choices can make it much easier to have the Holy Ghost as a constant companion. It can make it easier to face life’s many trials and to hold your family together during difficult times. Personal worthiness can also be looked at, as making sure that your personal testimony remains strong. One of the most important things you can do to keep your testimony strong is to continue to build your relationship with your Savior and Heavenly Father on a daily basis. This means taking time … Continue reading

Preparing for Hard Times

This last session of General Conference has several talks that focused on how to survive trials. The talks were on spiritual, emotional, and physical trials. They all talked about the importance of being spiritually prepared to handle the hard times that will come into every person’s life. They also talked about the importance of being physically prepared for trials. One way to be spiritually prepared is to build a network of people that can help you during difficult times. Sometimes you simply need a shoulder to cry on, or a friend to drop in and check up on you. Other … Continue reading

The Church is Still True

The Relief Society president told me I’m fat. The Cub Scout leader made fun of my son when he couldn’t remember the Cub Scout promise. The elders quorum president forgot to arrange for help when I moved and I ended up doing the whole thing myself. When I told the bishop about my marital problems, he said I needed to be more humble. My home teacher thinks I don’t have enough faith. In every branch of the Church, in every state, country and province in the world, you will find ward members that don’t get along. There will always be … Continue reading

Young Women: “Anchors of Testimony”

In “Anchors of Testimony,” Sister Mary N Cook speaks to the young women of the church. She opens the talk by describing water lilies. She explains that they grow in stagnant ponds and that they have stalks to root them firmly in place. This anchors them during the torrential storms that come their way. She compared the girls to the lilies with their anchors being their testimonies. Sister Cook then challenges the girls to pray that their testimonies may be strengthened. She urges this especially if they are having a difficult time understanding or living a principle of the gospel. … Continue reading
