General Conference: “Special Experiences”

In his talk “Special Experiences” Elder Ronald A Rasband speaks about the importance of having spiritual experiences to build our testimonies. He compares these blocks to the blocks that you use to build the foundation of your house. As you use each of these experiences to strengthen your testimony, you will better able to deal with the challenges of life. Elder Rasband shares one of his spiritual experiences. He tells about a visit that he made to Peru to take care of church business. While there he had the opportunity to visit some members new home. These members lived on … Continue reading

Cultivating Your Testimony

Testimonies are very fragile. They need to be cultivated on a daily basis. There are times when it seems that you are strong, but seem to forget the need to continually nourish your testimony. It is also easy to push your testimony to the back burner as you struggle to meet the daily demands of being a parent. The simple fact is that the most important thing you can do each day is to nourish your testimony. You can do this by studying the scriptures and praying. Of course your children needs must be met, so you may need to … Continue reading

Defining Moments

There are experiences in life that can wake you up and give you the opportunity to really evaluate your goals, and your priorities. These opportunities can often motivate you into action. Recently I had one of these experiences. I had a medical issue that could resolve itself in two different ways, one seriously altered my outlook at life and would severely limit my ability to achieve several of my life time goals. The other way was much less serious and far-reaching. Thankfully it resolved in the second way. However over the last month, as I went to the doctor, and … Continue reading

Preparing for Our Spiritual Droughts

The area in which I currently live has been experiencing a severe drought for several months. The supply of drinking water reached dangerously low levels, though things are beginning to look up due to recent rainfall. However, I grew up in Utah, which is basically a desert, and so when they would say we were in drought conditions and I looked outside and saw green grass that was not watered, I scoffed. How could we be in a drought when the grass is naturally green? Recently the news and politicians have been talking about a mismanagement of the resources. They … Continue reading

New Year’s Resolution: Growing Spiritually

If you have decide to increase your spirituality as one of your New Year’s resolutions, this is a great goal. You can do many things to help you draw closer to the Lord. However you may want to be careful as you pray. Often when I have prayed for increased strength, faith or knowledge, I have been blessed with a trial to help me grow stronger. Here are some things you can do to better your relationship with the Lord this year. 1) Study the scriptures and the words of the prophets this year. There is no better way to … Continue reading

Meditation

It can be difficult to find time to sit and meditate. However, this is an important and essential thing to help keep our testimonies strong. As a mother to young children, I rarely get a quiet moment to focus on the things of the spirit, and when I do at the end of the day, I’m generally too exhausted to really be able to focus on things the way that I want to. Meditation is focusing and thinking on a certain subject. When I think of meditation in regards to my testimony, I think of it as a time to … Continue reading

Don’t Judge the Church by the People

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve had a conversation with someone that goes like this: “My Uncle Henry used to be a member, but then his home teacher said something unkind, and he hasn’t been back to church since.” I think it’s safe to say that we’ve all had a church leader say something insensitive or downright rude. This does not, in any way, reflect on the church itself. The leaders we are given are human. They have bad days. They don’t always act in the manner God would like them to behave – in short, they’re just … Continue reading

Family Home Evening: Strengthing Your Testimony

In continuing with the idea of using General Conference talks for family home evening lessons, I’ve pulled some ideas from “Do It Now” and “Three Goals to Guide You.” This lesson will focus on the things that each individual and family needs to be doing to grow spiritually. Then it will focus on the importance of doing those things now, and removing the things that may be standing in your way. This lesson can also be used in conjunction with the Building Your Testimony lesson. You can open your lesson by reviewing the scripture Alma 32:28. This scripture focuses on … Continue reading

My Shepherd Will Supply My Needs

When my husband and I were first married, we were both unemployed. I had been working for a floral shop in a town about twenty miles away from the apartment we’d found, and quit my job in order to move. He lost his job the week before the wedding, so there we were, both dead broke. We’d already put a down payment on the apartment and decided to go ahead and move there anyway, and we did, after the honeymoon. We then both went out and pounded the pavement. Following a prompting, we decided not to wait to start our … Continue reading

To Whom Should We Go?

In the book of John, chapter 6, we read: 66. From that time many of his disciples went back, and walked no more with him. 67. Then said Jesus unto the twelve, Will ye also go away? 68. Then Simon Peter answered him, Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life. Truly, where else would we go to find the light and truth we receive from our relationship with Jesus Christ? No one else has it. No one else can give us eternal life, seal us to our families, buoy us up day after day. … Continue reading
