Finding Fantasyland Website Mini-Game

Now that Fantasyland is about to debut, I received an email in my Inbox: an invitation to take a Hero’s Journey to discover the new Fantasyland.  This was per my sign up from the New Fantasyland website. Taking the Hero’s Journey doesn’t tell us a lot about the new Fantasyland, but it’s a cute story nonetheless.  Visiting the site sucks guests into the story, telling about how the villains came to Fantasyland, stole powerful talismans, and obscured them with their magic (which just so happens to take the shape of a big puffy purple mist, just like in Disney-ABC’s “Once … Continue reading

Historically, men tend to spend more time playing video games than women do, and they also tend to play a wider variety of games. This … Continue reading

Want to have some fun, and work on your genealogy research at the same time? A genealogy related game called Family Village is now accessible through Facebook. It is currently in the alpha testing stage. You can use this game to help build your family tree. Last time I wrote about the Family Village game it was in the process of doing whatever it is that is necessary in order for a game to appear on Facebook. If you are playing Farmville, or Frontierville, two incredibly popular and addicting games created by the Zynga game company, then you will have … Continue reading

Facebook Has Genealogy Based Game

Facebook is filled with dozens of games that you can play. Personally, I enjoy playing several of these games with my relatives who are on Facebook. Now, there is a new genealogy based game on Facebook, called Family Village. I figure it’s only a matter of time before one of my relatives sends me an invitation to start playing that one with them. If I had to guess, I’d say that the most popular game on Facebook is Farmville. Somehow, the idea of growing virtual crops is one that appeals to a lot of people. I started playing this game … Continue reading

Fun Games for Classrooms

Good teaching, effective teaching, is actually an art. An effective teacher has a creative way of relaying information to the students so that it is fun and interesting. While not all school work can be fun, much of learning can be exciting if it is presented in a proper manner. Some teachers are natural creators. They are creative and make-up fun and educational games with ease. Other teachers are not so fortunate to have this gift. However, that does not mean that their classes must be boring and games cannot be used. There are many resource books and websites that … Continue reading

Technology is a Poor Substitute for Social Interaction

Are your kids addicted to the internet? How much time do your kids spend looking at a screen instead of interacting with family? Parents might want to consider taking steps to limit the amount of “screen time” that their kids are getting. The New York Times has an article by Jane Brody in which she discusses the negative affects that countless hours of playing video games can have on children. It’s not just teenagers, either. Younger kids can also behave as if they are addicted to “the internet”. How does this happen? There is a Kaiser Family Foundation study that … Continue reading

Is it Ever Ok to Bribe your Kids?

How do you get your children to do what you want them to? What do you do to encourage them to do certain things and to refrain from doing other things? Many parents have, at least sometimes, resorted to bribing their children. Is that necessarily a bad thing? Is it ever ok to bribe your kids? New findings reveal some interesting answers to these questions. First, it would be helpful to figure out what a bribe is (and what it isn’t). Author Ellen Perry points out that there is a continuum to be aware of. Motivation is one one end, … Continue reading

What Toddlers Learn at the Playground

Now that outdoor play weather is here, my boys and I have been spending plenty of time out in the yard. That has been wonderful, and we have lots of fun together, but to keep things interesting we like to go out to some local parks and playgrounds a few times each week. Not only do the various play structures enable my little guys to develop new and exciting (okay, sometimes terrifying) physical skills, the presence of other children gives them a chance to play and interact with someone other than me. While I do have to stay pretty close … Continue reading
