Disney World Planning & The Big Family

My family and I are in the midst of planning our next vacation to Disney World. Our last vacation was a trip for three, two parents and one child. Our next trip will be a little more complicated and require a great deal more juggling because this will be a vacation with four adults and two kids. A Trip for Six Six people planning a vacation to Disney World is completely doable, but you need to consider your accommodation, park tickets and more. One tricky part is we want to stay at the Animal Kingdom again, but the standard room … Continue reading

Take Me Out to the Ballgame…

My husband, Paul, and son David love to go to the ballgame. The problem is, with salaries in the stratosphere, ticket prices are outrageous. We’ve found a better way. Most all of the Major League teams have special promotions. One of our favorites is the Master Card Grand Slam family promotion. On specific Wednesday nights throughout the season, Master Card subsidizes tickets: four tickets, four hotdogs, and four Pepsis for $50. Doesn’t sound like a bargain? When you consider that in-the-park hotdogs are $6 apiece and drinks are $4 each, it’s a huge savings. There are a lot of other … Continue reading

Free Hockey Tickets (AHL)

I used to have a friend who told me he played hockey for Harvard and was in the hockey scenes from Love Story (for those of you under 40, that’s a movie). I thought he was pulling my leg and told him so. He asked me why I thought it wasn’t true. “Because you have all of your teeth!” He laughed and pulled out a partial plate, then regaled me with hockey tales the rest of the evening. Hockey can be a violent sport. But so can football, soccer, and even badminton. There’s a lot more to it than checks … Continue reading

You Got A Speeding Ticket… Now What Are You Going To Do?

The siren was on, the lights were flashing—you got pulled over for speeding and no amount of tears, feigned ignorance, or limited English could get you out of the ticket… now what do you do? Hang on to your wallet, there are ways you may be able to avoid paying the ticket, and perhaps, more importantly, clear it from your record. Traffic School You typically have to arrange the outcome of these daylong programs ahead of time. For instance, in most cases, you’ll have to pay for the ticket, but if you complete the class you won’t have to worry … Continue reading

Smokey Clocked You Going 80… Now What Do You Do?

What did you do the last time you were pulled over for speeding? Cry? Beg for leniency? Pretend you don’t speak English? I just spent 20 minutes on the phone with a friend who was pulled over for speeding a block from her home. She can cry on cue better than any actress I’ve seen. This “talent” to cry profusely usually gets her out of paying $200 speeding tickets. Guess what? It worked again today. So what if you can’t release the waterworks as well as my friend? I posed the question to a police officer friend of mine who … Continue reading

A Warning To Oprah Fans

If you are an Oprah fan and are currently trying to get tickets to see the queen of talk in person, be on guard. According to officials, online thieves are using the lure of tickets to “The Oprah Winfrey Show” to rip off the identities of consumers. The scam was exposed after several Oprah fans notified Winfrey’s Harpo Productions, Inc. that they had been ripped off. According to the state Attorney General, the thieves have been sending unsolicited e-mails asking people to send them personal information, verify financial information or wire money to a third party for tickets to the … Continue reading

Record Breaking Speeder

Have you ever been pulled over for speeding? Be honest. I have. But not nearly as often as an Arizona mortgage broker who has traveled at high speeds so frequently she recently made state history. Francesca Cisneros has racked up 70 speeding tickets in the last five months, that’s a new state record according to the Scottsdale Police Department. How is that possible? Apparently, it is easy when you have speeding cameras mounted in areas that Cisneros frequents. Those cameras documented the 32-year-old driver as she tore through Scottsdale streets in her Honda Civic dozens of times between March 2nd … Continue reading

Plan a Neighborhood Talent Show

You can keep your kids busy for several weeks planning a neighborhood talent show. Have them gather their friends and find out how many would like to participate in some way. Make a list of children who would like to perform and those who would like to help create a stage, costumes, props, etc. Have the kids make up tickets, which can be handmade or printed from the computer. Sell tickets for a quarter or so (cheap enough that other children can buy tickets). Get your neighbors involved and encourage them to buy tickets. Try to sell tickets in advance … Continue reading

So Long to $99 Plane Tickets???

My former colleague nearly broke into tears after hearing the recent news that Priceline, the website that popularized the “name-your-own-price” option for airline travel, is considering doing away with the option. Apparently, the company has seen a sharp decline in the number of travelers exercising the right to name-their-own price. Currently, Priceline still offers the option for air travel, but has increasingly turned to selling regular published fares. Priceline’s CEO says, “Our opaque airline ticket business has been shrinking dramatically over the last couple of years.” He goes on to say that the site’s airfare-bidding bookings are down 30 to … Continue reading

“Click It or Ticket”

Regardless of what state you live in, you are likely familiar with law enforcement programs designed to encourage seatbelt use. In my state (Wisconsin) it’s called “Click It or Ticket.” Other states have slight variations on the name including “Click It…It’s the Law” and “Click It, Why Risk It?” The campaigns were instituted to warn motorists that officers would be stepping up patrols and cracking down on drivers who weren’t wearing their seat belts. Now, on the eve of the busy summer travel season, the program gets a new focus. Officers will be turning their attention to motorists traveling on … Continue reading
