The Difference Between Being Frugal and Being Cheap

Do you know the difference between being frugal and being cheap? They are not the same thing. Here are some ways to tell, or at least explain, the difference. In the past, many people used the words cheap and frugal interchangeably. Someone who saved money was automatically cheap, a tightwad, a skinflint. Today, frugal is actually coming into style. As the economy and the environment changes, people are embracing the idea of saving money. But sometimes people are motivated to save money at the expense of the good of others. This in my opinion is being cheap. There is a … Continue reading

Tips for Slicing Homemade Bread

You know that I am a big advocate of making your own bread to save money (and eat healthier. Well, the other day, a reader of our blogs mentioned to me that she would love to have home made bread but thought that it was too much trouble. I suggested that she get a bread machine to make things easier. “Oh, it isn’t making the bread!” she said. “It is slicing the bread. The slices are always uneven or the bread gets squished or the slices are too big to use for sandwiches.” I was happy to hear this, because … Continue reading

Miserable? I Don’t Think So

I have been trying to find a really good definition of the term frugal that is in line with my perception of leading a frugal lifestyle, but I haven’t had much luck. The words miserly, tightwad, cheapskate, and penny pincher, which are frequently used as descriptive terms for frugal living, just don’t fit my definition. In some cases, these words are used in a light hearted way, but in other cases, they are used in a mean spirited manner. It’s rather frustrating, because these words sound so negative, and I believe that frugal living is a very positive thing. I … Continue reading
