The DIY Water Cat

Ever since I started incorporating viral animal emails into my blogs, my sister’s always on the lookout for ones that’ll especially tickle me. She hit the nail on the head today with a forward she sent me entitled “Water Leak.” Her message preceding the “story” was: “I DON’T want to give them any ideas, but…” Then the forwarded part of the joke followed: Jennifer and Jim kept getting huge water bills, they knew beyond a doubt that the bills weren’t representative of their actual usage, and no matter how much they tried to conserve the high bills continued. Although they … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: New York’s Public Toilets, BBQ U and Holidays at the Hilton

New York City seemingly has it all—–bright lights, world-class attractions, and luxury accommodations. The first of the self-washing, wheelchair-accessible toilets is expected to open sometime this month in Madison … Continue reading

Travel Update: Super Jet and Super Potty

SUPER JET How much would you pay to take one of the first flights in the world’s largest passenger jet? In a previous blog I told you that some mighty rich flyers were ponying up big bucks for the privilege. A few weeks ago Singapore Airlines put several seats on an inaugural flight in the highly anticipated 471-seat double-decker Airbus A380 on eBay with the goal of donating the proceeds to charity. Yesterday, the carrier announced it has already raised more than $1.25 million. The lucky (and rich) passengers will get a chance to see if their money was well … Continue reading

Toilets 101

I waited until I was in my 30’s to get married and when I did I ended up marrying a pilot who is frequently out of town. Consequently, I have learned how to fix many appliances on my own. (Did I mention that I also loathe calling “professionals” because I know it will mean a major hit to our household budget?) In the past decade I have learned to fix everything from vacuum cleaners to washing machines and dryers. I am by no means an expert, but there have been some situations that I have faced repeatedly over the years, … Continue reading

Toilets: The Aerosol Effect

This is not a fun discussion, but it is an important one, because it concerns our families and health. We all know that toilets are a source of germs, but many people don’t realize just how dangerous (germ wise) toilets really are. I had heard the theory that when flushed, toilets create a mist or aerosol of germs that is sprayed and scattered throughout the bathroom. When I first heard about it, I was told this aerosol could travel up to 20 feet. I was skeptical. While 20 feet is a bit of an exaggeration, experiments have been conducted that … Continue reading
