Storm Chasers

This year may be one of the deadliest on record as far as tornadoes go, yet people are still fascinated by these storms. While most of us prefer to be as far from a tornado as possible, there are people, known as storm chasers, who actually go hunting for tornadoes. Storm chasers not only capture incredible footage of these destructive storms, but many also help gather important research so we can know more about what makes tornadoes tick. By knowing as much as possible about tornadoes, we can better protect ourselves against them. The very first storm chaser was believed … Continue reading

Murphy, Tornadoes, and One Ruff Night

Just shy of a month ago violent weather hit one afternoon and caused Murphy, Mr. Meow, Tabby, and I to huddle together in the laundry room due to potentially tornadic activity heading our way. If you’ve caught any of the news today, you’re well aware Tennessee was one of the states ravaged by bad weather once again last night. It was a dark and stormy night… There were tornadoes in the Nashville area around 10 p.m., but not near where we live. Thankfully we weren’t forced to seek refuge in the laundry room again. (But I did have everything set … Continue reading

A Stormy Thursday Huddled Together in the Laundry Room

Yesterday afternoon around two o’clock the weather suddenly turned violent. The sky grew dark –very, very dark– and Murphy was beside himself panting and shaking with fear. It was the second time that day he’d worked himself into such a state. But this time was even worse than the first. The first time was earlier that morning when a thunderstorm rolled through just after I’d gotten in the shower. My dog who hates baths was suddenly standing on his haunches desperately pawing at the shower door for me to let him in. (And the second I opened the door to … Continue reading

Seriously…?!? What a Spring!

Just two days ago I was talking about May Day and celebrating the changing seasons and last night another spring storm came raging through like a stampeding herd of buffalo. Last February, just before I had my surgery, a severe windstorm damaged a section of our fence along one side of the house and weakened the rest of it. It took us about a month to get all the estimates and the information so that our insurance company would cover the claim and replace that length of fencing. About a week ago, that new fence was completed. Violent Storm During … Continue reading

Traveling Into The Eye Of A Hurricane

As a television reporter I’ve been dispatched into the middle of blizzards, floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes(ironically, so I could tell viewers: “The conditions out here are treacherous, don’t risk harming yourselves by venturing out here.”) When my report was over I would run into the live truck and wonder why I was chose a profession that would require putting myself in harms’ way. I don’t look back at those experiences with particular fondness, but I rationalize that it was part of my job and I did get paid for it. Which is why I was shocked to learn that there … Continue reading

Home and Family Severe Weather Tips

We are moving into the severe weather season. While severe weather is usually at its most dangerous during spring months and often into summer, it can arise any time of year, in any area. Severe weather threats can include downpours, flooding, powerful lightning and thunderstorms, violent winds, damaging hail and of course tornadoes. Any of these can become a threat to your home and your family. The best way to keep your home and family safe is to know what to expect and to know how to react when storms strike. Most severe storms and tornadoes occur in the afternoon … Continue reading
