Cher: The Original Diva – Part 2

When I last left off in my Cher blog, it was the end of the 70s. She was twice divorced and her record career had stalled. So, what do you do when you aren’t selling records? You reinvent yourself as an actress. At the age of 36 (often considered “old” in Hollywood), Cher starred in the Broadway production of Com Back to the Five and Dime, Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean. She received critical praise and later starred in the film version. She appeared in Silkwood as unglamorous lesbian – showing us a completely different side of Cher. For the role, … Continue reading

Seattle, WA: Mariners’ Tour

Are you a Major League Baseball fan? Even if you’re not, you’ll love this tour. Safeco Field offers a variety of tours. For just $7 ($5 for children), you can take a 60-90 minute tour “behind the scenes.” We’ve done this a few times and always learn something new every time we go. For the general tour, we learned all about the history of the Mariners, and saw the ins and outs of running things at such a huge venue. We were a small group, made up of six in our family, a couple of Japanese exchange students we had … Continue reading

Factory Tours Are Fun And Free!

One of the most overlooked form of family fun is the factory tour. From watching a chip flip to witnessing marshmallow peeps being born, kids and adults will be fascinated during this great family activity. My family and I have visited many factory tour programs, and we have always had a great time. The tours are usually very kid-friendly and family oriented. Tour guides have always been super nice, and the factories are eager to show off their stuff. Free samples are almost always given. Ever eat a potato chip hot from the fryer? Yummy! Most of the tours are … Continue reading

A Christmas Classic Comes To Life

Who doesn’t remember the holiday classic “A Christmas Story?” You know, Ralphie Parker… his desperate pleas for an official Red Ryder, carbine-action, 200-shot, range model air rifle… his tongue sticking to a frozen flagpole… the leg lamp. You remember don’t you? Brian Jones sure does. The 30-year-old former Navy lieutenant has been obsessed with the quirky film since he saw it for the first time with his parents in the late ‘80s. So obsessed, that when the house from the film was put up for sale on eBay in December 2004, Jones said there was nothing that would have stopped … Continue reading

What’s Happening In The World Of Music

And you thought she just appeared at Dollywood… not so… in fact, Dolly Parton just announced she will kick off her first major European tour since the 1970s in Denmark next year. According to Parton’s publicist, the 60-year-old country singer will begin her eight-stop tour in Horsens, 125 miles west of Copenhagen, on March 7, 2007. From there Parton will continue to Norway, Sweden, Finland, the Netherlands, England and Scotland before ending the tour April 2 in Dublin, Ireland. A bit closer to home, Disney announced yesterday that “High School Musical” is hitting the road with a nationwide concert tour … Continue reading

A Unique Two-Wheeled Tour

Don’t let the title fool you—this blog isn’t about bicycle tours, rather it will detail ways you can experience military-based technology on two wheels. I’m referring to the Segway Human Transporter. I introduced (or re-introduced) you to it in my previous blog… so now that you know what they are. Here’s some information on how you can spend some time on one without shelling out $5,000 (the amount it retails for) to do so. In California you can take a Segway tour of celebrity homes in Beverly Hills. Likewise you can see the city lights of Atlanta; the incredible skyline … Continue reading

Traveling Into The Eye Of A Hurricane

As a television reporter I’ve been dispatched into the middle of blizzards, floods, hurricanes, and tornadoes(ironically, so I could tell viewers: “The conditions out here are treacherous, don’t risk harming yourselves by venturing out here.”) When my report was over I would run into the live truck and wonder why I was chose a profession that would require putting myself in harms’ way. I don’t look back at those experiences with particular fondness, but I rationalize that it was part of my job and I did get paid for it. Which is why I was shocked to learn that there … Continue reading

A Free Ride Through A Sweet Treat

Recently, I posted a blog about fun factory tours you could take as a family without having to pay a dime. I received wonderful comments, including one that suggested Hershey’s Chocolate World, in Hershey, Pennsylvania. Today I will take that reader up on her suggestion… and the timing is perfect because just a few days ago, the Great American Chocolate Tour Ride at Hershey’s Chocolate World just re-opened after undergoing a $5 million update. The ride, which debuted in 1973, was updated to ensure the scenes reflected the latest chocolate-making technology. The ride is meant to simulate the experience of … Continue reading

Touring a Television Station: A Family Trip

Ever wonder what it takes to put on a nightly newscast? Get the answer by taking a tour of a television station. Not only is it fascinating and educational, but it’s FREE! I was a local television news anchor and reporter for 10 years, prior to making the decision to stay home and raise my daughter. During my time working at various stations around the country, I gave many tours, showing children (and parents) what goes on “behind-the-scenes.” An average studio tour features a number of behind-the-scenes demonstrations. Including learning how images–like weather maps–appear behind meteorologists. Or how anchors and … Continue reading
