Toxic Toys

Shopping for gifts for kids just got a little bit harder. In a test of over 1200 toys, 35% contained lead, including a Hannah Montana card game and a Go Diego Go! backpack. The tests were performed by a coalition of environmental groups and is available for perusal here. Of the toys tested a mere 20% had no trace of lead or other harmful chemicals. 23 of the toys listed had been recalled this year. Jewelry products were among the toys most likely to contain high levels of lead. Federal standards dictate that a toy should not contain more than … Continue reading

Christmas Shopping: Recalls and finding Safe Toys

Lead paint, chemicals that mimic the date rape drug, swallowed magnets, laceration hazards, and more have led to numerous toy recalls. With Christmas just around the corner, many parents are nervous about buying toys. While 80% of toys sold in the US today come from China, and some have decided not to buy toys with the “made in China” label, that’s not the only issue. Worried about Buying Toys for Christmas?

I don’t want people to panic and I’m not trying to convince people to refuse to go Christmas shopping or anything like that, but I’m still uneasy about buying toys for the kids in my life with all the toy recalls lately. While some stores have recall notices right in the toy aisle (and often aisle after aisle of such notices) notes taped to shelves aren’t too reassuring. Here are some other sources of toy safety information that will hopefully help us make safer choices: CPSC Toy Hazard Recalls … Continue reading

Heads Up! – Fisher-Price Laugh & Learn Musical Learning Chair Recall

This isn’t really a true, proper, full blog entry, I admit it; think of this as a little blog bulletin. I have two friends with children under 15 months old who both own these toys so I thought I should go ahead and pass the information on to families.com readers. The Fisher Price Laugh & Learn Musical Learning Chair has been recalled due to a potential strangulation issue. No children have died or been severely injured but there have been three reported incidents of children getting their heads caught between the seat and table attachment and one child developed a … Continue reading
