Things To Remember on a Roadtrip

All this warm weather has me thinking about vacations. My last post was about camping and my suggestions. This post is about the joy of taking a road trip with your child. As a single parent of an only child I think my road trips are easier in some ways but harder in others. Easier because Hailey has no one to fight with, that also means she has no one to play with, sing with or just in general entertain each other. All those car games are much easier when there is more than one person actively looking for the … Continue reading

Buckle Up: It’s MY Law

“Is everyone buckled?” I can’t even count how many times my mom asked that question before pulling out of the driveway or parking lot. She often didn’t even start the car until all of our buckles were latched. You’d think that with all the statistics out there on how many lives are saved by wearing seat belts, people would buckle up without a thought. Heck, even if they don’t care about saving their lives, you’d think people would buckle up to avoid getting a hefty ticket. Prior to having a baby, my husband and I always buckled; however, we didn’t … Continue reading

Holding Down the Fort When You’re Not There

I wrote yesterday about the various ways I try to get geared up for a business trip and organize my home business, family and life BEFORE I leave. Since I am a single parent, as well as a home business owner, I still need to run my business and take care of things from afar no matter where I might be or how far away from home. It is one thing to make sure that the cats are getting fed and the mail is collected, it is quite another thing to keep a business afloat from thousands of miles away… … Continue reading

Marriage Roadblock: Latin America vs. Europe

Wayne and I have run into one of the biggest problems we’ve had in years. One we haven’t been able to find a way of settling without getting very huffy with one another. See, we both have a passion for travel and really want to take an overseas/out of country vacation. We just can’t seem to agree on the same destination. Ever since before I met Wayne I’ve dreamt of going to France. Not so much Paris as somewhere in the countryside. (I’m not a big city person but everyone keeps telling me I should make an exception for Paris. … Continue reading

Traveling with Mr. Meow

I’ve only had to travel long distances with cats a couple of times. Once when we moved from Tucson up to Phoenix and we relocated Sneakers with us. The next time was hauling Mr. Meow up here from Jacksonville, and then for our family road trip to Denver for Christmas 2005. The reason we chanced the road trip to Denver with both Murphy and Mr. Meow was because he traveled so well on the nine hour drive from Jacksonville to Nashville. I was really worried about him and had even gone to the vet to get him a knock out … Continue reading

Single Parent Travels: Set Expectations

My son is usually a pretty well behaved child. Now I’m not saying that he doesn’t have his moments, because he does. He can get loud and obnoxious, or over excited and rambunctious, lippy and rude; however, that is not he norm. I can usually tell how he will behave on any given day by three things. First, how much sleep he got the night before; second, how he reacts when I wake him up; and third, how he behaves in the first 10 to 15 minutes. Due to the reasons for our travels, where we were going, the stress … Continue reading

Reason #176 I Love Working at Home

Reason #176 I love working at home? I don’t actually have to be at home to do it. As I sit and type this, I am at my parent’s house, three hours from home. My in-laws are on their way to a conference, and they offered to let me tag along for the ride, in order to visit my parents. It wasn’t out of their way (my parents only live two minutes off the freeway, so it was easy to drop me off and keep going) but it was still awfully nice of my in-laws to make the offer. They … Continue reading

Kids Frugal Entertainment: Travel Games For Anywhere

Many people travel during the holiday season. By car, by bus, by train, by plane. Regardless of how you go, you are stuck “inside” something until you reach your destination. I consider that a place to entertain children indoors. Oddly enough, we’ve carried these travel games to our kitchen table, to our living room on family night and even at bedtime we sometimes play a game. We aren’t traveling this holiday season, but many times even just for a trip to the mall or somewhere else in the car we play these games. The best part? They cost nothing, are … Continue reading

Hotel Rooms—Smoking or Non-Smoking: The Choice Is No Longer Yours

When you make a hotel room reservation do you request a smoking or non-smoking room? Depending on where you book a room, that option may no longer exist. Two major hotel chains and hotels surrounding the “happiest place on Earth,” have recently extinguished the option of lighting up indoors. As of March 1, 2006, Disney’s three California hotels, Disneyland Hotel, Disney’s Paradise Pier Hotel and the Grand Californian are 100% smoke-free establishments. The Grand Californian had already been a non-smoking property since its opening in 2001, but you can now breathe easier at the other two hotels as well. Disney … Continue reading

A New Exit Option–Could It Help Keep Airfares Down?

How many times have you had your patience tested when exiting an airplane? Perhaps, you are trying to quickly de-plane in an effort to catch a connecting flight, only to be thwarted by a fellow traveler who wants to regal you with his vacation stories while moving at a snails pace to retrieve his carry-on, get down the aisle and out the door. Sound familiar? If it does, and as a result, you have wished airlines would consider offering another exit option you could be in luck. In an effort to get passengers on and off their flights faster, several … Continue reading
