Air Travel Tidbits

It’s good news and bad news for frequent flyers in this installment of “Travel Tidbits.” Let’s start with the bad news: United Airlines recently announced it would be charging a $10 fee to all passengers whose flights originate from Los Angeles International Airport. Today US Airways and Delta announced they plan to do the same. United representatives’ say the surcharge is meant to offset what it claims is a $10 million rent increase being imposed on it by Los Angeles World Airports. According to news reports, in December, Los Angeles World Airports raised the rent for all carriers who fly … Continue reading

Family Travel: More Kid-Friendly Restaurants

I don’t know about you, but when our family hits the road for a family vacation there are only so many meals I can tolerate ordering from a hanging fluorescent menu. By day two I insist we eat at least one meal at a sit-down restaurant. However, I realize that this can add up (especially if you are not staying at a condo or resort with a kitchen that allows you to make your own meals). In a previous blog I provided a list of some of our family’s favorite roadside pit stops. Here now are a few affordable additions … Continue reading

Government Giving Parents A Break On Passports For Kids

Good news for you parents who travel internationally with your children. The Homeland Security Department just announced that U.S. and Canadian children will no longer need passports to come into the country by land or sea. If the news has you cheering, thank Canadian government officials and various tourism groups throughout North America—–both fought hard to ease the restrictions. Just so there is no confusion, this new policy change does not affect children who fly. There will be no change to the new rules for those who travel by air. Everyone coming into the United States by plane, no matter … Continue reading

Holiday Movie Comes To Life In Denver Airport

Have you seen the new movie “Unaccompanied Minors?” It’s a film about a group of kids stranded at a snowed-in airport during the holidays. The movie’s producer–Warner Brothers—categorizes it as a comedy, but for the parents of children traveling alone and stranded at Denver International Airport for the past three days the scenario wasn’t a laughing matter. The Blizzard of 2006 stranded 9-year-old Cole Churchill in the Denver Airport, but what’s worse is that according to his parents, the unaccompanied boy got lost in the terminal while they frantically tried to track him done by phone for hours. According to … Continue reading

Book Review: “Are We There Yet?”

What is it with kids? Why do they have to ask, “are we there yet?” before you even back out the driveway? Okay maybe I’m exaggerating just a bit but I swear as I have traveled back and forth from Mobile to New Orleans this past year Tyler seems to grow more and more impatient with the amount of time it takes to drive this short distance. Mind you we’re talking a two hour drive but to him it seems like an eternity. So I was pleased to find on my weekly trip to the thrift shop this little book, … Continue reading

Grab And Go Kids Travel Bag

In a previous blog I wrote about preparing a grab and go bag, a bag you would use in case of an emergency where you would have to evacuate your home. Today I want to talk about a different grab and go bag. This bag is for traveling. The idea came from my own, duh moment yesterday. Over the next few months I will be making frequent trips to New Orleans as I prepare to return home. On Sunday I met with the contractor to pick out colors for the wall, tile, carpet, kitchen cabinets and to take care of … Continue reading

Taking a Trip to Galveston

Galveston, Texas is a wonderful place for a family vacation or couples who enjoy the beach, shopping, visiting historical homes, and other fascinating activities. We took a trip to Galveston a few years back and found it to be a charming city with great people. One of our first stops was to Moody Gardens, which includes a 10-story Rainforest Pyramid, complete with a tropical environment. One of the main features of the rainforest is the largest collection of bats in the southwest. In addition, Moody Gardens had an IMAX 3D, which provided an experience that seemed so realistic. Then, we … Continue reading

Traveling With Children—Learn From My Mistakes

I used to be one of those travelers who would see a mother and her screaming child in the boarding area of an airport and secretly hope they wouldn’t be seated near me on a crowded flight. Well, that’s not entirely true. What I was really hoping for was that they wouldn’t be on my flight at all. Fast-forward a few years–now I’m the one with the baby. I might be older and wiser than I was when I was single, but giving birth didn’t gift me with the power to read minds. Then again, I don’t have to be … Continue reading
