Rehabilitating Murphy

Wednesday morning Murph and I had what’s become our ritual two week check up with the vet who operated on his paw. (Since the beginning of October, every two weeks we go in for a progress check.) I thought since the one last time, which I thought was going to be Cast Off Day but didn’t quite turn out that way, was a little more involved than normal we’d have a quick in and out trip this Wednesday. I also thought the soft cast would come off and Murph would be done with all that. Wrong! The vet did take … Continue reading

Are Dogs Taking Over Hollywood?

Recently I’ve noticed something that I don’t think I’ve ever seen happen before: an upsurge in the release of dog movies. I’m not exactly sure what’s going on, but all of a sudden it seems like dogs are taking over Hollywood. Take a look at what I mean. Since October, look at how many dog movies that are either already out or are soon to be released: Beverly Hills Chihuahua When I first saw the previews for this movie, I did what I think a lot of people did: rolled my eyes and said, “Oh my goodness, they really will … Continue reading

Catalog Gifts for Dogs and the People Who Love Them: What on Earth and Wireless

Much to Wayne’s chagrin, it’s that time of year when our mailbox comes under assault by relentless rounds of catalogs. I have to admit I do buy my fair share of things from them. But what I love most is curling up on the couch and perusing all the different wares. I never know what I might find! This year I’ve come across some neat things I’ve never seen before, as well as some favorites from years past. I thought I’d make a list of them to help me keep track of what I might want to gift to who … Continue reading

Are We as Therapeutic to Them as They Are to Us?

It’s been a week since Murph’s cast has come off, but he hasn’t quite been the same. In fact, I’d venture to say he’s been a little depressed. His appetite’s still okay, and his ears perk up at the offer of chewie sticks or Scooby Snacks, but he just hasn’t quite been himself. Even with the cast on, he’d been kind of rambunctious. Especially in the last couple of weeks before it came off. It was clear he was feeling better and getting his pep back. He’d go search out one of the many sympathy toys he’d been given, bring … Continue reading

Virtual Pets

In addition to any real pets you may have, do you also claim any virtual pets? I don’t. But I think if Wayne finds out about them, the next time I feel like adding to our family, in addition to his “We don’t need any more animals,” spiel he always gives me, he also might add, “But if you really feel you need another, get a virtual pet.” What’s a Virtual Pet Anyway? That’s what I was curious to know. I kept stumbling across the term. At first I thought it was something where you make a donation to virtually … Continue reading

Why You Should Take a Dog with You When You Die

Recently Wayne was goofing around with our DVR again and decided to put it to use recording old Twilight Zone shows. Before he leaves for work most mornings, we sit in front of the TV and eat breakfast together. Sometimes we watch the news, but since that’s been too depressing lately we’ve been relying on whatever DVR recordings are in the queue for our morning entertainment. That’s how we came to find ourselves watching one of the Twilight Zone reruns Monday morning. No Dogs Allowed in Heaven It was called “The Hunt.” It’s about an old man and his dog … Continue reading

Picking Halloween Pet Toys

Yesterday I wrote about how it was I decided I needed to buy Halloween pet toys for Murph and his best friend Tucker. Today I’m going to tell you how I ended up picking the toys I did. (You may be thinking that sounds a little humdrum, but bear with me. There’s a method to my madness.) Decisions, Decisions As I left off in yesterday’s blog, I explained how I’d decided to buy Halloween pet toys from Doctors Foster and Smith. Here are the toys I was deciding between: 1. Halloween Witch of Devil Loofas. 2. Halloween Pumpkin Puzzle. 3. … Continue reading

21 Ways to Make Your Dog Smile

The last time we went to have a Murph post-op paw check-up at the surgeon’s office, we were placed in a room that had artwork in it this time –in the form of a cute poster titled “21 Ways to Make a Dog Smile.” It was a long, skinny one with three columns seven rows deep of 21 different smiling dog faces. Above the pictures were captions that suggested such smile-invoking activities as “Play catch,” “Make it a Blockbuster night,” “Do you want to go for a…WALK?!,” “Joyride!,” “Bring your dog to work day,” and “Teach your dog to smile…literally!” … Continue reading

How to Keep Your Pet from Cheating on You

In keeping with the theme of the last couple of days, I couldn’t very well talk about unfaithful pets and cats adopting other people without examining ways to keep your pet from straying. Over in Marriage, infidelity is a hot topic. I’m of the camp that believes one of the factors that causes a husband to stray is because he’s not getting enough attention at home. I figured based on other people interviewed in the MSNBC.com article “Getting dogged: When your pet cheats on you” by Kim Campbell Thornton that it would stand to reason that’s why pets cheat too. … Continue reading

Unfaithful Pets

Once upon a blog, Aimee wrote about pets who prefer people other than their owners. I got to thinking about this yesterday when I was writing about my friends who have been adopted by cats lately. In both instances, the cats technically belong to other people. But they’ve adopted new ones, which technically makes them unfaithful pets. Or does it? Cuddles Cuddles is a little calico that really belongs to the people who moved in to the house next to Cindy and Michael, our across-the-street neighbors. But Cuddles has decided she likes to camp out at Cindy and Michael’s. She … Continue reading
