Fall Fashion

We were in Toy R Us the other day and my 2-year-old ran into their Halloween costume display. That’s right. Directly across from the back-to-school gear stood dozens of Halloween costumes. Of course, my daughter decided this was a golden opportunity to play dress up and tried on at least seven furry animal costumes (never mind that it was pushing 90 degrees outside). After about an hour (can you say overindulgent parent) she finally decided that this year she would be trick-or-treating as a gold giraffe with brown spots (she was a Dalmatian last year). So what does this have … Continue reading

Celebrity Fashion: Would You Wear It?

I love flipping through fashion magazines. I flip, because frankly, there are very few items on the pages that I would actually wear. I think the models look great, but most of the featured pieces are either way out of my price range or I risk being disowned by my family if I were to ever attempt to make the look my own. I am more GAP than Giorgio Armani, more J. Crew than Jean Paul Gaultier, more Old Navy than Oscar de la Renta. But, celebrities are a whole different story. If someone like Paris Hilton shows up to … Continue reading

Simplified Spelling

The American Literacy Council supports a movement to make spelling American English easier. Apparently this is not a new movement. The desire to simplify the American language allegedly began in 1908 when Andrew Carnegie helped to create the Simplified Spelling Board, now called the Simplified Spelling Society. Members of these groups and others want to simplify our system of spelling to spell words like they sound. For example the word “said” would be spelled “sed” and I suppose spell would have to be changed to spel. The American (English) language has not had a good overhaul in over 400 years … Continue reading

Celebrity Baby Boom–Do You Sense A Pattern Here?

“Oh look, Mariska Hargity had a baby boy,” I exclaimed. I hadn’t intended to say it out loud, but my husband who was sitting nearby heard me and replied: “Who?” After I explained that she was the actress who plays NYPD detective Olivia Benson on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” he responded, “Why do you care?” It’s a good question. Unfortunately, I don’t really have a good answer. I don’t really know. For some reason I am drawn to headlines that proclaim, “Hollywood Actress Welcomes New Bundle of Joy.” Perhaps, it’s because I remember the incredible jubilation I felt … Continue reading

Strip It to Get Fit? I Don’t See It

Yes, this is a title about stripping to get fit. No, I am not talking about heading to a seedy part of town or into what is rather euphemistically labeled as a gentleman’s club. I am talking about one of the latest trends in the fitness world. I’m sure you’ve seen the ads or at least seen the DVDs. I’ve seen them in several places – including family shopping stores like Walmart. Yes, I’m talking about the strip tease fitness craze; for those of you have not heard of it – as much as I wish this was a Friday … Continue reading
