Do Your Teens Still Go Trick-or-Treating?

Exactly how old is too old to be wandering around a neighborhood dressed as a werewolf, ringing doorbells in an effort to score mountains of free candy? Some parents believe that you are never too old to celebrate Halloween… my mom being a prime example. She could care less if a horde of teens pulls into her driveway (in a vehicle driven by one of the masked hooligans) and stumbles up her walkway while pulling on the one and only item that resembles anything close to an actual costume (in some cases a Freddy Krueger mask paired with the same … Continue reading

Entertaining: Hosting Halloween

These days, you just can’t be too careful. That’s why many parents are now taking children to Halloween parties or hosting Halloween parties themselves, instead of going out trick-or-treating. It makes sense, but it’s sad that we have allowed our society to become so dangerous that children can’t even trick-or-treat. The good news is there is no reason children can’t still have fun. When hosting a Halloween party, encourage everyone to come in costume. It adds to the party atmosphere immediately. You might even want to dress up this year. How long has it been since you were in costume … Continue reading

Home Safety: Halloween and Harvest

This time of year is exciting, especially for little ones. Halloween is well on the way, soon to be followed by the major holidays of the year. Yay! This is a great time for family fun but don’t forget safety (check out Trick or Treat Home Safety Tips). It’s never too early to start instructing kids on safety for various celebrations. There are many things to keep in mind when it comes to safe celebrating. For Halloween, first, make sure your decorating is not dangerous. Halloween decorating has become almost as big as decorating for major holidays, such as Christmas. … Continue reading

Halloween Tricks and Treats for Pets: Food Goodies

Are you the kind to take your dog out trick or treating with the family? Wayne and I would, but since we don’t have kids, we don’t go. We do hand out treats though –to both kids and animals alike. Over the last few years I’ve seen a marked increase in the number of pets making the rounds with their kin. I love to make sure they get a little something too, so I always have something on hand. Mostly just regular dog treats, like Scooby Snacks, but this year I’ve found a few Halloween-themed pet goodies I might have … Continue reading

Halloween Tricks and Treats for Pets: Toys

As I was admiring all the cute Halloween costumes for dogs, I also came across some cute Halloween-themed toys. Some of these just might provoke a few tricks from your four-legged friend. Doctors Foster and Smith • Halloween Trio –Ghost, Pumpkin, or Frankenstein: These are smaller toys (six inches) for small and toy breed dogs. But don’t let the name fool you –you don’t get one of each in the “trio.” You have to order them all separately. However, singly they’re $2.99, but buy all three and they’re $2.29 each. • Spooky Musical Odd Toys –Pumpkin, Ghost, or Cyclops: These … Continue reading

How Do You Feel About Halloween?

How do you feel, as a parent, about Halloween? I know some people oppose the holiday for religious reasons, but many churches offer an alternative celebration on Halloween night. For me, Halloween is a chance for my kids to dress up, to enjoy using their imaginations to “become” someone different for a few hours. It’s make-believe at its finest. This year my son is a Power Ranger (he’s 6) and my daughter is a cheerleader (she’s 2). It was the end of the “cute” costume phase with my son—something I admit saddens me. No longer will he wear a fluffy … Continue reading

Trick or Treat Home Safety Tips

Do you have fun going to the door to pass out candy to all those adorable trick-or-treaters? Sometimes the costumes are just too funny. I’m not big on the scary, gory, ones, but I just love when little tiny tots all dolled up in their cute costumes walk up and whisper “trick or treat” in their shy little voices. Anymore, we don’t get very many trick-or-treaters. I think one reason is that our house is set back a fair distance from the road. Another is probably because we’re rarely at home for much of the evening on the 31st, because … Continue reading

Halloween In The Midwest—Not So Scary After All

Halloween is three days away, but for many kids in our area trick-or-treating starts tonight. That’s right TONIGHT! What am I saying? Our mini ghosts and goblins won’t actually be going door-to-door at night; rather they will be knocking from 1 p.m.-4 p.m. I’m not sure where you live, but here in the Midwest portion of the United States kids will be gathering treats in broad daylight on a day that’s not even Halloween. What has happened to our world? I can’t speak for all midwestern states, but I will for Wisconsin and Minnesota. Several cities in those states mandate … Continue reading
