You Know You Work With Animals If…

With apologies to that Jeff Foxworthy guy, I saw a list of “how you know you’re a vet tech” today. Some of the things made me giggle; others made me go “huh?” But then, I’m not a vet tech. But I was inspired to start my own list: you know you work with animals if… You pluck shed tufts or pick eye goobers off other people’s pets. I’m guilty of this one all the time. I can’t resist picking those eye goobers! You measure your own pets’ food very carefully. Since I started at the cats-only boarding facility, I’ve gotten … Continue reading

Hospital Stays for Pets

Many surgical procedures for pets are done on an outpatient basis. You drop your friend off early in the morning, and pick him up at the end of the day. But if your furry pal has to stay overnight or for several nights… you may be wondering if a visit will cheer him up or just make things worse. Why you may want to visit your pet in the hospital: If your pet is refusing to eat, a familiar face may encourage normal eating behavior. If you would like to see first hand how your pet is doing. First Aid: Eye Problems, Part Two

A QUICK RECAP: My Moose dog was having some eye issues. He was pawing at his face all night, his poor little eye was all squinty, and there was a clear gooey discharge. Of course I freaked. Thank goodness the vet was willing to squeeze us in! By the time we got to Beach Animal Hospital (our vet), Moosie was acting more like his usual self. He even had his squinty eye open. In his exploration of the waiting room, he hopped up on the scale… to my dismay, he’s GAINED weight. Doc Moreau joined us in the exam room … Continue reading

First Aid: Eye Problems

Late last night my Moose started to have some trouble with his left eye. He was pawing at it constantly, and there was a clear gooey discharge. Like any concerned parent would do, I tried to pry his eye open for a look. No dice. Moose was not interested in having me investigate his eye problem. So… the pawing continued. All night long. This morning? Same story. Pawing at his eye, clear discharge. The area around the affected eye is warm to the touch, warmer than the other eye. It seems to be a little swollen, as far as I … Continue reading

Selecting a Vet

If you’ve just added your first fur-baby to the family, congratulations! Regardless of whether you have a baby, adult, or senior, one of the first things you should do is take your new pet for a checkup. So how do you pick the right one? Use some of the same criteria you used when you picked your family doctors: location, convenience of hours, friendliness of staff, availability of walk-in hours and emergency services, affiliations, and fees. Location, Location, Location! Is your potential vet relatively close to home? How far are you willing to drive? Is the office in an easy-to-access … Continue reading
