Learning to Walk

As your baby celebrates her first birthday and becomes a toddler, she may not be toddling yet. Most children learn to walk between nine and seventeen months of age. Each child has his or her own developmental timeline, and the ways in which babies and toddlers approach those first steps are as unique and varied as the children themselves. My oldest son Dylan was a very fast crawler. Crawling worked well for him and got him where he needed to go. He was standing and pulling up before his first birthday but he was not walking yet. He was, however, … Continue reading

Going for Walks

We’ve lived in our house for nearly four years. The property contains an acre of land. The small community and large lot are what drew us to this location. The housing development is quiet and our neighbors are nice. Our toddler daughter Jessie loves to go outside and run around the large backyard. She has plenty of room to run. Unfortunately, she likes to run to the neighbors’ houses. The neighbors who have children have very interesting things in their yards. These things are particularly interesting to our toddler. She is especially obsessed with the battery-operated John Deere ride-on truck … Continue reading

I’ll Do It Tomorrow

I went outside this morning for the first time this week. You might think that going three days without ever leaving the apartment is crazy, but there have been weeks this winter when we haven’t ventured out. It’s a beautiful, sunny day, and if I wasn’t able to look at the temperature or see the snow, I’d think it was spring. The sky is blue, there’s a breeze rustling through the trees, and I can hear the mellow clanging of our neighbors’ wind chimes. Sure, I could bundle my baby up and take her for a walk in the stroller. … Continue reading

JJ Cole BundleMe: Not Just For Carseats

A well-meaning friend gave us a JJ Cole Original BundleMe for Christmas. It’s pink, it’s thick, and it’s adorable. Is it safe for a carseat? I’m not so sure. For this reason, we decided not to use it on our daughter’s carseat. Although we don’t use it in the carseat, the JJ Cole BundleMe is not collecting dust. I found an awesome way to use it. It is especially handy if you live in a state where winter lasts from November to April and is bitterly cold. Before I get into what I use the JJ Cole BundleMe for, let … Continue reading

Christmas Morning Walk

My three children spend Christmas Day with their father and all his relatives. It wasn’t always easy for me–in fact, in the early years after the divorce it was incredibly painful and I felt like it was unfair and unjust–after all, wasn’t I the one who even WANTED to have these children and hadn’t I been the primary care parent dealing with all the doctor’s appointments, school meetings, etc.? How is it that after all that I ended up alone on Christmas? Eventually, of course, I got over myself and adjusted. After all, that is one of the grand things … Continue reading

Make Your Walk Even Healthier!

There’s no doubt about it — walking is good for you. Want to make it even better? Try these tips. Make sure your walking music is safe. Keep the volume at a reasonable level. Make sure you can still hear traffic if you’re walking outside. Look for a headphone that sits in front of the ear, rather than inside it to protect your hearing. Count your steps. Pedometers are pretty reasonable in the price department these days. Try to take one thousand steps in ten minutes of walking. Too much counting? Try to take one hundred steps in a minute. … Continue reading

How We Celebrated Murphy’s Sixth Birthday

Photo By Arif Budiman Yesterday marked the sixth year anniversary of when Murph picked us out at the animal control shelter and we broke down and brought him home. Since we don’t know when Murph’s true birthday is, this is the one we go by. And since Murph’s birthday marks the end of the Team Pryor September Celebration Extravaganza, we had to wrap it up right. Double Parkin’ It Murph loves to take walks and go for rides, and if you combine those with a trip to the park…wow. That’s a big day in Murph’s world. After we did our … Continue reading

General Conference From the Past: “Look to God and Live”

In October 1978, Elder Carlos E. Asay of the Quorum of the Seventy gave a talk entitled “Look to God and Live.” In this talk, he described the importance of keeping our gaze focused on Christ. In doing so, we, too, might look to our Father in Heaven and receive eternal life. Elder Asay provides various stories, in and out of the scriptures. He begins by speaking of a man who had sunk low. Involved in drinking and in drugs, this man always kept his head low, focused on the feet of those around him. Said Elder Asay, “this alcoholic … Continue reading

Sneaking “Me” Time Into Your Day

Many moms wonder how they can sneak a bit of “me” time into their busy day. For me, I find most days to be a juggling act. I cringe when people say that it should be easier for me since I “don’t work”. It’s sad that some people think the life of a writer is all glitz and glamour and we’re sitting around in our pajamas all day, sipping coffee and reading steamy romance novels. Or watching Oprah. Okay, I do work in my pajamas from time to time, but that’s not the point. I probably “work” more hours than … Continue reading
