Taking the “Work” Out of Workout

I don’t like the word “workout.” Do you know why? Because the idea of work and fitness doesn’t mesh well. I mean, who wants fitness to be work? We work all day…whether it is in our job, as a parent, and the list goes on. The last thing you feel like adding to your plate is more work. So how about taking the “work” out of “workout”? Sure, you can just not use that term and replace it with something else. But it still doesn’t take away the stigma often attached to fitness, that it really is nothing but work. … Continue reading

First, you need to understand that there is no one way to lose weight or gain strength. The options before us are innumerable. This is good news because … Continue reading

Should a Wedding Be a Reason to Lose Weight?

The wedding season is just around the corner and I have been hearing stories about bride-to-be’s attempting to lose weight in order to “fit” into their wedding dress. It got me thinking…should a wedding be a reason to lose weight? I don’t really think so. I know this goes against the normal way of doing American weddings but think about why this isn’t a good idea. First of all, it makes no sense to buy a dress you can’t fit into, in the hopes that you will eventually be able to. If you met your soon-to-be husband the way you … Continue reading

Apple Applies for Patent on Fitness Center App

If you have an iPhone or another similar device, you have a tool where a number of features and functions are easily accessible. I have a Droid and since getting it in December, I have been amazed at the things I can do with it. Making a phone call is nothing compared to my ability to Facebook, listen to music, surf the web or take videos. The app store is one of my favorite features. I have downloaded some really cool apps, everything from being able to scan bar codes so I can compare prices at different stores, to being … Continue reading

Fitness in Your 40’s

Well, we have looked at fitness in your 20’s and 30’s and now we are on to my personally favorite decade, the 40’s. I don’t exactly know what it was about turning 40 but it felt great. For me, this is the decade where I began to get much more serious about fitness. I realize it would have been beneficial to get an earlier start but what I am learning about this decade is that it’s never too late. I have found yoga to especially be beneficial, which has helped in improving my posture and gaining flexibility. But in your … Continue reading

The idea of finding time to squeeze in some exercise may sound impossible. But it is during this period that it is most crucial you find the … Continue reading

Fitness in Your 20’s

Fitness tends to take on a different life when you are in your 40’s, compared to those in their 20’s. So I am starting a series on fitness across the decades, starting with the 20’s and ending with the 50’s. Ideally, fitness should begin while you are still in your 20’s. When you develop healthy habits early on, you are more likely to continue them into the later years. There are generally two groups of people in their 20’s, those that don’t feel they need to incorporate fitness right now and those that are avid workout buffs. Those who don’t … Continue reading

Using Rewards as Motivation

Rewards are very motivating. When I used to work as a preschool teacher, I found it to be a great way to gain cooperation. I have used it as a mother and in a variety of other settings. Children aren’t the only ones however, who enjoy rewards. Adults love to be rewarded for hard work as well. A raise, an extra day off or a promotion are great ways of being rewarded in our careers. At home we might find a reward being the one who gets to pick the family movie. There are all different ways that rewards can … Continue reading
