Gary Coleman’s Final Wishes and Another Will Pops Up

It seems as if this story will never end. This week, we learned of Gary Coleman’s final wishes – at least for his funeral. One of the many wills that has popped up since the actor’s death was filed Tuesday in Provo, Utah. The two-page will read that Gary wished to be cremated, but his funeral wishes were far sadder. He stated that only “those who have no financial ties to me and who can look each other in the eyes and say they really cared personally for Gary Coleman” be allowed at the wake. It is not known if … Continue reading

Do You Have a Living Will?

Many people don’t like to think about — or talk about — death. But it may be wise to think about the shape you’d like the end of your life to take now… before someone else has to make the decision for you. In the summer of 2001, my paternal grandmother passed away. It was somewhat unexpected — she had been living with Parkinson’s disease, but was largely stable. It was my paternal grandfather who had been very sick that same summer, and he was the one we were worried about. When Gramma died, we started making plans for her … Continue reading

Do You Have a Will?

A horrible thing happened to a friend of mine. Her husband’s best friend died suddenly of a heart attack. He was only 40, active and slim. There was no heart disease in the family. It was a shock to all, one that put fear in our hearts and sent many to the doctor for a physical. Unfortunately, you just never know when disaster will strike. This is why people pay loads of money for insurance, they hope to never use. What is surprising is while most families carry home, car, and life insurance, they don’t bother to have a will. … Continue reading

Providing For Your Writing Work in Your Will

For freelance writers and those who produce writing work for a living, you may be working so hard at just getting through the daily grind that you haven’t even thought of what to do about your writing work after you die. However, it can be a good idea to include provisions for your writing–copyrights, published and non-published work, notes, journals, etc. in your Will. You may want to name someone to be a “literary executor” in your Will. This person will make decisions regarding what can and can’t be published, what to do with current works, etc. This doesn’t have … Continue reading

The Importance of a Will

If you do not already have a will in place, you should begin to prepare one now. If you are relatively young, and do not plan to leave over a million dollars in assets you should be able to complete a simple will and you may not need a lawyer to help you. You can simply buy a book or a kit to complete the will. Once you grow older and acquire more assets you will want to change your will to meet your needs and then you should probably contact a lawyer to help you with a will. When … Continue reading

Poor Little Rich Girl???

When famed television producer Aaron Spelling died last month he left behind an estate estimated to be worth nearly $500 million. A lot of money that is now leading to a lot of bitter feelings between Spelling’s daughter Tori (of “Beverly Hills 90210 fame) and her estranged mother Candy. According to US Weekly magazine, “Tori will only receive a $200,000 cash inheritance from her father’s estate, combined with around $600,000 in private investments.” To everyday folks $800,000 may seem like a windfall, but not when compared to Aaron Spelling’s total worth. A source who claims to know the family intimately … Continue reading

No Car? Do You Still Need Auto Insurance?

In some parts of the country owning a car is not as important and many people use mass transit and rent cars for a weekend get-a-way or vacation. Urban Americans are choosing to use public transportation for day-to-day commutes. Young adults away at college find it is actually easier to live on campus without a car. When it’s time to get away from the city, or make a visit back home most people find a car is the easiest way to get where they want to go. If you drive at all, it’s a good idea to have an automobile … Continue reading

Choosing Your Child’s Guardian

When I was a child my father’s cousin and his wife were killed in a car accident. They left behind five children. Luckily they had a written will that named their children’s guardian, an aunt and uncle that lived in the same town. If not their children would have become wards of the state and most likely separated. As a parent we never know when tragedy might strike. It is important that we have prepared for and secured our child’s future. Choosing a guardian for your child is a big decision. Many people choose family members, but friends are also … Continue reading

Leaving Your Child While On Vacation

My husband and I are going to Cancun for a week for our 10th Anniversary. We are leaving our three children ages 6, 4, and 2 with my mother-in-law. In preparation I have compiled a long list of information that parents, who are vacationing without their children, need to provide their caregiver or do before they leave. Make a schedule – include the times that you do certain things and all of the activities that your children need to attend. Meal plans – compile a list of the things that your child will and will not eat. Write down breakfast, … Continue reading
