Movie Misquotes – Part 2

I threw out a few movie misquotes in one of my last blogs, so here are a few more. Are you guilty of any misquoting? “I don’t think we’re in Kansas anymore, Toto.” Yes, it is true that as Dorothy, Judy Garland never uttered these words in The Wizard of Oz. What she actually said was “Toto, I’ve a feeling we’re not in Kansas any more.” “I want to suck your blood.” While many of us associate the quote “I want to suck your blood” with Dracula, Bela Lugosi never said that in the 1931 version of Dracula. However, Tim … Continue reading

Celebrities and Sleeping Pills – Part Two

Earlier I had written about celebrities that had tried to take their life with sleeping pills. Fortunately, they were saved and many went on to live long lives. However, there are a sad few who tried to kill themselves with sleeping pills and succeeded. Here is that list: The name Clara Blandick may not be familiar at first, but will probably remember her as playing Auntie Em in The Wizard of Oz. Clara began acting in 1901 and retired in 1969. Her health had began failing in the 1950’s, when she began to lose her eyesight and suffered from severe … Continue reading

Return to OZ: A More Literal Tale of OZ

If you’ve ever read L. Frank Baum’s original OZ books, you’re probably aware of the fact that the books were somewhat darker in tone than the 1939 MGM musical. While I, personally, love the musical and claim it as one of my favorite films, I am aware that the film took some liberties with the work and made it a little less dark. Well, for the most part. Those flying monkeys were still a bit ominous. In the mid-80’s, Walt Disney Pictures decided to take a chance and try a film that was closer in resemblance to Baum’s fantasy tales … Continue reading

Movie Bloopers: The Wizard of Oz

Bloopers 2: Wizard of Oz My first husband was raised in another country and had never seen the Wizard of Oz. I finally insisted he watch it with me one night, because it’s such an important part of America’s pop culture. All through the movie he kept saying things like, “So that’s what it means when people say ‘We’re not in Kansas anymore!’” It opened my eyes, too, about how much this movie is in our collective consciousness. Even if you’ve seen this movie ad naseum, it’s worth another look, if only to find these funny bloopers. Give your kids … Continue reading

The Wizard of OZ: A New Look At an Old Classic

I know what you’re thinking. “Why do we need another Wizard of OZ film review? The film is pushing 70 and is already considered a classic. Why do we need to be told, once again, how great it is?” I know, I know. Trust me. I thought of all that before I began writing a word of this review, but upon opening up my Three Disc Collector’s Edition Wizard of OZ DVD, I realized that, until now, I had never really and truly “seen” The Wizard of OZ. With the Three Disc Collector’s Edition, there are truly bits of OZ … Continue reading
