Will Your Homeschooled Kids Fail to Have a Great Career?

Ah, TED Talks. What would we do without them, really? Those inspiring folks, getting up there and ranting to us about everything under the sun. This morning, I’m enjoying Larry Smith’s “Why You Will Fail To Have A Great Career.” As someone who has a somewhat unorthodox career, I’ve thought a fair bit about pursuing your passions. I am someone who has no shortage of passions. I love writing. I love the outdoors. I love working for social change. I love music. Unfortunately, these passions generally fall on the list of undesirable careers, those careers with low prestige, low earning … Continue reading

Alabama Homeschool Groups and Resources H-M

To succeed in homeschooling, it is in your best interest to get involved with other homeschoolers. You should join a homeschool network or group near you. For this reason, I have decided to give a full listing of homeschooling groups throughout each state. Yes, there are other sites that list homeschool networks and support groups but none of are comprehensive. Some of them only list Christian, others only list those affiliated with them. I will attempt to list all of them. This installment is Alabama H-M. Profile of a Homeschooled Olympian: Katie Hoff

As we approach the 2008 Summer Olympics, now is a good time to talk about some Olympians who have been homeschooled. Being able to make education work around training through homeschooling is something many of these athletes such as Katie Hoff have in common with each other. According to her message board at www.katie-hoff.com, she felt that homeschool and public school has their advantages, you have to decide which one works for you. She also mentioned that she had friends who invited her to public school dances, which she took advantage of for the “socialization”. Kate Hoff was the youngest … Continue reading

Can Homeschoolers Be Good Citizens?

I recently came across a conversation on one of my homeschooling email lists about homeschooling and citizenship. One woman stated that in her response letter from the school district regarding her intent to homeschool, she got a message back that essentially said that the school would no longer be held responsible for the child’s education nor the type of citizen they would become. Such a statement assumes that without the help of public schools, a child would surely be in danger of becoming a poor citizen. That seems like a large pill to swallow, doesn’t it. What many of us … Continue reading

At Last: The Conclusion to the Heritage Report Odyssey!

Hooray! Meg did her Heritage Report on Korea! For those of you wondering what the big deal is, well, maybe it isn’t that big a deal…but I’m hoping her change of subject signals pride in being Korean and willingness to acknowledge her adoption. When I last wrote about this project, Meg said she was doing it on Canada. She began to draw the Canadian flag, but I put off helping her research the rest of the report in the hope she’d change her mind and do Korea. She changed her mind four days before the report was due, but in … Continue reading

Homeschooling Then and Now

This post is for new and prospective homeschoolers trying to get a handle on how to start homeschooling. When I began homeschooling, I read at least 30 books on how to homeschool, how homeschooling went, and how homeschooling should go. All of these books were good and valuable, but after homeschooling for 4 years now, I look back and shake my head. Following all of the advice in those older and often outdated books is akin to feeding my child milk from a bottle because my mother fed me that way. Here are some differences between homeschooling then, and now. … Continue reading

“Why I Homeschool My Son with Asperger’s Syndrome.” One Mother’s Story

The following is an interview I had with Lorri, a mother of three from Texas. (I’m not using her last name for privacy reasons.) Her son Steven (pictured), age 9, has Asperger’s Syndrome. See my blog entry, “Asperger’s Disorder: Basic Diagnostic Criteria” for more information about this condition. 1. How did you first find out your son has Asperger’s? What were his early symptoms? “Language frustrated him, and I noticed OCD-type behaviors, like needing to travel the same route home, eat from the same bowl, and line up toys. There were sensory issues where his clothing had to be cotton … Continue reading

Little Hands Can Help

“Can I help you, Mommy?”  That is the question I get almost every time I enter the kitchen to make a meal or dessert.  There is a part of me that is elated and another part of me that would rather not bother.  If I allow little hands to interfere than my task will take longer and result in a mess only a two year old can make.  Too often, I find myself  turning down my little helper in waiting while I rush to get the cooking done.  I hardly look up when I turn her or her siblings down.  … Continue reading

Saying No Can Bring More Joy Into Your Life

I struggle with saying no to people, including myself. Once I became a single mother I was determined to do the best job I could so that my child would not suffer from being raised in a single parent household. Part of that determination was feeling like I had to be everything to everyone. I never said no when someone asked for help. I never said no when Hailey wanted me to stop what I was doing and entertain her. I never said no when I would tell myself to just keep going, people live perfectly well on five hours … Continue reading
