Hiring Help When You’re a Single Parent

My most recent blog post was really more of a vent about the frustrations that sometimes come with the territory of being a single parent, mainly because we are left to do most everything ourselves. I have recently been considering hiring someone to mow my yard for me. It’s a job that I really don’t enjoy, and also one that doesn’t get done nearly often enough due to my number one obligation: my children. There are a few chores you could hire someone to help with: yard work, housekeeping, and childcare. Yard Work: This could include gardening, mowing, shoveling, and … Continue reading

Family Yard Day

Today our family headed out to the front yard armed with brooms, rakes, and hedge trimmers. And no, yard work isn’t as fun as the amusement park, but that’s okay. I want the boys to participate in keeping up their house and yard. I want them to appreciate some of the work that goes into keeping a place together. And I want them to learn how to do that work. And besides, working together as a family can be fun. And along with sprucing up our yard, we did have some unexpected fun. We edged around the sidewalk which left … Continue reading

Home and Garden Tips that Work

I love handy tips, so I’ve got a few more to share. These work great: Fresher Fridge Did you try using rubberized shelf liner in your fridge? There are some other things you can do to keep your fridge organized and cleaner as well. Try adding a storage tray or shallow container to one shelf and using it as the space where you store leftovers. That way, they won’t get shoved to the back and end up turning into something scary. You’ll not only be more likely to remember to use stuff up, but you’ll also be able to pull … Continue reading

Yard Work is Hard Work

After doing something strenuous, I’ve heard people say, “I found muscles I never knew I had.” I’m here to tell you that yard work gives that statement a whole new perspective. Ouch! I’ve been working in my yard and garden for the past several days, and I’m starting to feel my age! I have never ended up this stiff and sore from yard work or gardening in my life. Of course, my husband and I have turned into Mr. and Mrs. Super Gardener, so it’s true that we’re doing more than usual, but still… Wow! I’m sure it will be … Continue reading

Update on Yard Work

I was all set to spend part of one morning this week writing an update about all the yard work I had planned to get done over the weekend. Well, even though the temperature wasn’t too bad, it did end up raining most of the weekend, so I didn’t get much accomplished. I now also have standing water and some very soft areas. The driveway seems to be holding up okay for now, but I hope we don’t get much more rain before I can get some work done! I did get a small bit of cleaning done, but it … Continue reading

Are You Ready to Work on Your Yard?

I know I’m ready! It seems like every weekend so far, I have found an excuse not to do it. Some of them were pretty good excuses too. There were some issues with weather, and then mud from all the rain we’ve had, but it’s starting to be milder now. I hope it stays this way. It was sunny and in the sixties yesterday. Despite some wind, it was a beautiful day. It’s still early this morning, but it already looks like it’s going to a nice day. If it stays like this through the weekend, I will definitely be … Continue reading
