New Duty to God Program

Every once in a while, the church changes and updates their programs to better serve the needs of the members. I personally love how these programs, while the same in purpose and desired outcome, adapt to use new technologies and relevant goals to strengthen and uplift our youth. I also love how the changes to this program involve the family. According to the Questions and Answers section on LDS.org, the program “provides opportunities for parents and leaders to strengthen relationships with young men” and can “easily be integrated into family home evening and quorum meetings and activities.” Families are a … Continue reading

Teaching the Youth the Importance of Education

We are taught that while we can’t take any of our earthly possessions with us when we die, we can take our intelligence and our understanding with us as we progress past the veil. This knowledge has always inspired me to get a good education and to seek learning throughout my life. We recently watched the education segment of the church’s “Brand New Year” DVD with our youth, and I loved many of the aspects of the video. We watched and then talked about education, and I was really impressed with the way the video taught the youth about the … Continue reading

Young Men: Dress Appropriately

Often we hear talks about the importance of dressing modestly. In fact a recent Sacrament meeting was devoted entirely to the importance of modest dress. Often when we hear these talks we think of the young women. However the principle behind modesty, which is showing respect to ourselves and others can also be extended to the young men. First it is important to realize that the clothing that people wear makes a statement about the person. This is one of the reasons for the dress codes at BYU and other church schools. The image that you project to those around … Continue reading

Mutual Theme 2009 and New Year’s DVD

The mutual theme for 2009 is based on 1 Timothy 4:12 “Be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity.” Additionally leaders are asked to read the talk “Be Thou an Example” by President Thomas S Monson. You can find the talk in the May 2005 Ensign. This is an excellent theme for the youth, in a world where it is becoming harder to live the values that the gospel teaches. This theme gives the leaders of the church as well as families, an excellent opportunity to talk about the … Continue reading

Young Men: “And Who Is My Neighbor?”

In his talk “And Who Is My Neighbor?” Bishop H David Burton is speaking at the Priesthood session of conference. He gives a report of the humanitarian aid effort of the church over the past year. It is amazing to listen to all that the church has been able to do to help others in need. Bishop Burton stated that they responded to 170 major events. This averages out to about one every two days. The church helped out in countries around the world. They helped with natural disasters, fires, earthquakes, famine and storms. The church also donated food to … Continue reading

Young Men: “Give Heed Unto the Prophet’s Words”

In his talk “Give Heed Unto the Prophet’s Words” Elder Quentin L. Cook speaks to the priesthood session of conference. He opens his talk by sharing an account of how the firefighters fought the fires in Southern California last year. These brave men and women stood strong in the face of fast advancing flames, saving both lives and property. He points out that each of us will face times of crisis and danger, but that we need to respond appropriately. He points out that heeding the words of the prophets is one of the most important things we can do. … Continue reading

Spring Activities for Mutual

The spring is a great time to move some of the mutual activities outside. You can enjoy the additional sunlight as well as the great spring weather. It is also a great way to put all that additional energy to use, instead of having all the youth stuck inside the church building. Here are four easy activities. 1) You could teach the youth about gardening by planting a garden for a family in your ward. This could be for an elderly couple or it could be for a family that is struggling financially. You can extend this service project by … Continue reading

Young Men: “Blessed Are All the Pure in Heart”

In his talk “Blessed Are All the Pure in Heart” Elder L. Whitney Clayton opens his talk by describing fishing traps that he saw being used in the Caribbean. The traps were made of wire and there was a slot that the fish could easily swim in. However the wire had sharp edges on the inside that made it impossible for the fish to swim out of without getting hurt. Elder Clayton describes the trap that King David fell into when he looked upon Bathsheba. He relates that David fell prey to the advisory’s trap by looking, and dwelling on … Continue reading

Young Men: “Do It Now”

In his talk “Do It Now” Elder Donald L Hallstrom speaks to the men of the church at the Priesthood session. He opens with the story of his son, who procrastinated a school assignment and as a result did not have a family recipe to turn in for the class cookbook. He ended up turning in a friend’s recipe that used a lot of alcohol. The family suffered embarrassment from the incident. Elder Hallstrom goes on to make the comparison to those of us who may be procrastinating committing completely to the gospel. He speaks of the importance of reading … Continue reading

Young Men: “Raising the Bar”

In his talk “Raising the Bar” Elder L Tom Perry speaks to the future missionaries of the church. He begins by sharing a story about his son, Lee. When Lee was in high school he was a high jumper. He was practicing on a regular basis, and was consistently making his jumps. Elder Perry suggested that he raise the bar. Lee was afraid to do this because he might miss. Elder Perry pointed out that he couldn’t reach his full potential unless he raised the bar. Elder Perry challenges the young men to raise the bar of being prepared to … Continue reading
