For the Strength of Youth Series

Have you read the For the Strength of Youth pamphlet lately? I hadn’t until I was called to a Young Women calling a while ago. All I remembered was that as a youth I used to think of the pamphlet as guidance for what I wasn’t supposed to do. As I looked at it again, I was amazed at the simple doctrines, the understanding, and the love that radiates from the pages of this pamphlet. Everything is so direct and simple. Everything is doctrinally sound. It’s fabulous. Whether you have a teenager around the house or not, this little book … Continue reading

Fountain of Youth?

Wanna stay younger longer? Keep up your aerobic exercise or so the British Journal of Sports Medicine advises. When you engage in aerobic exercises (walking, running, jogging, cycling, and dancing) you are improving your body’s ability to consume oxygen as well as boosting your metabolism (your body’s way of generating personal energy). Sometime around middle age (40s), your base metabolism begins to drop off and will continue to decline, but if you maintain your aerobic exercise, you may actually slow the decline in your metabolism and even reverse it all together. Regular exercise is a source of energy and can … Continue reading

Reaching the Youth on Wednesday Nights

When it comes to youth attending the weekly activities, many wards struggle with keeping the Priests and Laurels active. This is a difficult task because the youth are working or involved in extracurricular activities. They may be extremely busy with schoolwork and may find it hard to fit everything in. However, these activities are still important for them to attend. Here are four things to consider when helping the youth to keep coming out. 1) If you are a parent you may want to lay out some ground rules about attending the activities. You may require that your youth attend … Continue reading

Why Memorize?

Yesterday, I suggested that you work on memorizing (or rememorizing) the scripture mastery verses. You may have asked, why? What is the purpose of memorizing scriptures? I would recommend everyone, from the youth down to retired folks, take the time to memorize some scripture. These verses can come in very handy. We know that the Lord speaks to us through scriptures. A non-LDS, Christian friend I know calls the Bible “God’s love letter to us.” What a wonderful way to think of scriptures! We know, too, that the Book of Mormon was written by prophets of old especially for our … Continue reading

General Conference: “Life’s Lessons Learned”

In his talk “Life’s Lessons Learned” Elder Joseph B Wirthlin shares experiences that he had as a young man that helped him to develop into who he is today. He speaks of these experiences to illustrate the many different experiences can affect who you become in the long run. Elder Wirthlin begins with a story of when he was on the high school football team. The linebacker who was blocking him was huge, and he made Elder Wirthlin nervous. Just before the end of the first half Elder Wirthlin dropped the ball. At half time his coach yelled at him … Continue reading

Ten Signs Your Youth is Off to EFY

If you have LDS teens, then you know all about EFY (Especially For Youth). It’s a wonderful opportunity for your teens to grow spiritually. Or, it is a fantastic chance to broaden the dating pool. The definition, of course, depends on who you ask (and who they are responding to). If you don’t keep up with the calendar, your teen can give you some great signs that EFY is fast approaching. 1. They ask if they can go ahead and purchase some nice school clothes now, instead of waiting for fall. They want to look their best! 2. Suddenly, your … Continue reading

General Conference: “Commitment to the Lord”

In his talk “Commitment to the Lord” Elder John B Dickson speaks specifically to the youth of the church. Elder Dickson emphasizes the strength of today’s youth and the importance of following the plan of salvation. He says: “You have come into this world at a time that has been anticipated from the beginning—a time prior to the Second Coming of the Lord, in which, on one hand, the gospel of Jesus Christ has been restored in its fullness and, on the other, there is great turmoil, confusion, and wickedness. The proving ground that you were born into is wonderful, … Continue reading

Young Men and Young Women: Summer Activities

It is time to begin thinking of summer activities for your youth. There are activities for your youth to attend with your ward, and then activities you may want to enroll them in this summer. I have included a few ideas as well. It is better to busy in the summer, than bored and getting into trouble. 1) Youth conference is a great activity for all LDS youth over that age of fourteen. This is a lot of fun. The ward or the stake may plan youth conference. Occasionally stakes may combine to plan youth conference. Youth conference is usually … Continue reading

Young at Heart

My husband’s grandparents are quintessential Latter-day Saints. Descended from plain-crossing pioneers, they had seven children over aproximately twenty-one years. My mother-in-law was their first child. When my husband, the first grandchild was born, he was only four years younger than his youngest aunt. Since this was about the same spacing they had between the rest of their kids, I suppose I shouldn’t have been surprised when Grandma told me at our first meeting that my husband “was really her son.” At the time, I thought she was joking, but after only spending a little while with their family as we … Continue reading

Five Themes for a Stake Youth Dance

You may be on the planning committee for the next stake youth dance. If so you may be struggling to come up with an idea for your next youth dance. You can help to enliven a dance by having a fun theme picked out for each dance that you plan. Here are five easy ideas. 1) You can have a tropical or Hawaiian theme night. This is easy to decorate for with large flowers, and leis hanging on the walls. You can have the youth come in summer attire or Hawaiian shirts. Of course you need to request knee length … Continue reading
