I was getting ready to write today’s blog entry and instead took a brief break. My daughter had the idea to write a job’s article on taking a break. I actually think this is an important idea.
Too often, we become focused on sitting and working, forgetting to take our necessary breaks. A ten-minute break is not just something a union imposes on you, it is truly critical for job performance. Your body and mind need a break in order to be the most productive. Therefore, stop working and take a break. In those 10 to 20 minutes, here are some things you can do.
1. Stand up and stretch. Reach for the sky, and then touch your toes. Roll your shoulders and twist your back. Relax and rejuvenate those stiff muscles.
2. Get up and move around. Walk around the block or at least down the hall and back. Depending on your work environment, a brisk walk can really make a difference.
3. Get outside. Even if it is 30 below zero, at least stand in the doorway and breathe in some fresh air.
4. Laugh! Read a quick joke or find a funny poem online. Visit a coworker who makes you smile.
5. Nap. Yes, even if you simply close your eyes for a few minutes and clear your mind. You will be amazed at how refreshed you feel.
6. Socialize. Visit with co-workers if you work in an office. Play with your kids if you work at home. Call your mom.
The main goal when taking a break is to move away from your work environment, both mentally and physically (if possible). No matter what you do for a job, a break will help you feel rejuvenated and recharged. This fresh outlook will help you to be more productive and better in your job overall.
