Over the several months I have been writing for Families.com I have written three articles entitled “Take Time to Pray” detailing things for which a Christian can pray about to God. In this entry, I want to approach the topic from a little different perspective.
In my prayer life I consistently ask God for different requests, and I am thankful to Him for things (although I need to be much more thankful than I am). However, very, very rarely do I praise God. I really struggle with the concept of praising the Lord, yet it should be something that is very easy to do. Sometimes I simply forget to praise the Lord, while other times I think about it, but I do not know what to say.
There are a couple of different things I think I could do which might help me become better at praising the Lord. First for me, I think it would be helpful to look to the Bible for examples of praise to the Lord. Reading through the many different Psalms is a great place to start. Praise and thanksgiving of God are two of the overlying themes throughout the Psalms.
The second thing I think which might help me to think about ways to praise the Lord in my prayer life, is to consider all that the Lord has done for me, as well as the world. Consider that God is the Creator of our world. Meditate on the fact that God sent His Son to die for not only my sins, but for the sins of the world. Reflect on the fact that God does not change, and that He is a loving, merciful, and just God. Praise God that He gave us the Bible, His Word, that we might know Him, and that we might know how to serve Him.
How do you praise the Lord in your prayer life? What ways help you think of ways to praise the Lord?
