The joys of lazy summer days. If you have pets, this time of year can be hard on them and your house. First there is all that hair. In order for them to lose their winter coat and be cooler in the summer, all that hair has to go somewhere, and it’s usually on your floors and furniture and clothes.
While you will never get rid of pet hair without getting rid of the pet, there are some things you can do to reduce the hair in your home.
Regular, frequent brushing is the best thing you can do. If you can help remove some of the hair there will be less to fall out on the floor. If you can brush them outside, even better, no matter how careful you are in the house that hair is going to fly.
Frequent vacuuming helps but animal hair is notoriously stubborn. Make sure you have plenty of lint rollers to get the hair off your clothes. Sometimes it helps to keep on in your car for a final touch up when you get out.
Regular baths are important to reduce the dirt your dog drags in. My dog loves to lay on the ground in the shade and then comes in and lays on the carpet or furniture transferring the dirt.
Another concern for pets in the summer is fireworks. Most dogs are afraid of them and will try to run away. If a car backfires going down the street behind my house, Clementine is trying to dig out of the yard.
More dogs are lost on the 4th of July than any other time of the year. If your dog is afraid make sure he is safely in the house and all doors are closed tightly. If your dog is more than just afraid your vet can give you something to calm him down before the fireworks start. Better safe than sorry.
