We have written here in the Single Parents blog about the challenges and rewards of going back to college or taking higher education classes in order to improve one’s situation, but we haven’t talked much about other types of classes. Community and Continuing Education courses can be a great way to get training, learn something new, meet new people, and gain confidence and self-esteem.
There are some great things about community education classes that make them perfect for the single parent—often the hours are convenient (one night a week instead of several, evenings instead of during the day, etc.) and the price is generally lower than a “for credit” class. I have also found that the demographic of community and continuing education classes tends to be on the older side so it can be a great opportunity to meet people and expand one’s social life and learn something valuable at the same time.
In the small city where I live, we have a couple options for community education courses—there is a local community college, and then there are often classes sponsored by the city and other entities. It seems every year the quantity of class offerings multiplies and there are courses in everything from investing to art to stress relaxation—many classes that seem tailor made for a single parent!
Keep in mind that some classes may be extremely popular and fill up quickly so it pays to check out the schedules and register early (or at least on time)—you may also find that your place of employment will reimburse you for work-related courses you take. Also, be sure to ask about child care—increasingly child care opportunities are available in conjunction with community and continuing education courses—or they may be able to at least give you referrals for appropriate child care opportunities.
