‘Everything’s getting quicker these days, even infidelity,’ Mick said when I told him about a recent article which had discovered it was no longer a seven year itch but a three year glitch. However infidelity isn’t the reason for these couples splitting up.
Rather than infidelity, a recent survey has found it is about that three year period where couples start to take each other for granted. And what are the things that are causing them to get disenchanted with their partner? Such things as ‘weight gain, stinginess, and toe-nail clippings on the bathroom floor and snoring’ are among the main causes. Now I don’t know about you but when I read that list I just thought it was about time people grew up and realized marriage is about commitment. It is about give and take and if you’re going to let things like this derail a marriage, then one suspects you shouldn’t have even been married in the first place.
Of all of these, snoring is not an insurmountable problem. As many couples have found there are ways around it. As for the others some of them are just plain petty.
Yet apparently these are the things that have led ‘to a swifter decline in relationships in the fast-paced 21st century, said the study commissioned by Warner Brothers to promote the release of comedy film “Hall Pass” in UK cinemas.’
This survey conducted among 2,000 British adults found the 3 year period to be the time when relationship stress levels peak. To try and keep the romance alive couples resort to solo holidays away from partners. Now, I don’t know about you, but could not imagine wanting to go away without my husband. A day or two at most is my limit and even that is reluctantly. I have been known to not apply for various writing retreats because I could not stand the thought of being away from him for a couple of weeks. I did it once for a week and hated it. Never again.
I guess it all depends on how much you want to be with your spouse and mine is still my favorite person to be with and I know I am that for him.
