Taking Holidays Off

Easter weekend is coming up and Easter is definitely my favorite holiday—the hopeful, sunny, springtime of Easter…but holidays aren’t always an easy given day off when you’re running your own home business.

In the world of home business operations, every day is potentially a productive day and every hour is an opportunity to generate income. Now, I’m not trying to sound greedy or like I have my priorities out of whack—I don’t. I’m not actually working every hour of every day, but when it is your own business, you can definitely feel the opportunity cost of taking a long weekend or taking time off for a holiday. Most of us, I think, make accommodations, and in our desire to put our family first, find a way to enjoy holidays and still get all our work done.

This could mean working extra hard in the week leading up to, or after a holiday to make up for lost time. Easter may be one day, but it’s really a holiday weekend so I have to decide how I’m going to manage staying on top of work responsibilities and still having some fun. For me, I have a hard time enjoying myself if I have work hanging over my head, so I try to make an extra push prior to a holiday or a weekend off—getting extra work done so I actually go into the holiday feeling like I am ahead. That way, I won’t feel “behind” when I get back to work on Monday morning.

I have to admit that I have been known to do at least a little work on some holidays. I try not to, however, as I’d really like to set a solid example for my kids. But, as the single parent and the sole support for my little family—sometimes duty calls. With some forethought and planning, however, I’m usually able to avoid working on holidays. How about you?
