One of my favorite shows to watch is “Cake Boss.” If you haven’t seen the show it’s about a guy named Buddy who runs a bakery in New Jersey. He creates the most beautiful and extraordinary cakes you have ever seen.
He is passionate about baking. He is doing what he loves. Even when he gets time off from work, he still ends up working. Recently his family took a trip to Rome. It was supposed to be his chance to unwind and relax. Instead, he found himself baking. He obviously found it difficult to take time off from what he loves to do.
For many of us who work at home, we are doing what we love. This is what can make taking time off so difficult. When you are doing what you love, sometimes you don’t want to stop.
I don’t know if others can relate but I find that working from home sometimes makes it difficult to take a day off. I have only really been working from home full-time for less than a year so I am still in the learning process of making this work to the best advantage.
In my eyes the best advantage encompasses my family, me and my editor. Trying to make it work to the best advantage for all three areas can be tricky. However I have managed to make sure that for the most part, I do my work at home Monday through Friday, giving myself time off on the weekend.
Once-in-a-while I will do some things over the weekend but for the most part, I have learned how to schedule my work and manage my time so that I get two days off. With Thanksgiving coming this week I wanted to make sure that not only was I able to take off for Thanksgiving but the next day as well. That means I have to do some shifting and preplanning.
When I used to work outside the home and I wanted a day off all I had to do was let my boss know ahead of time and it usually happened. But now when I want a day off, I have to do a lot more planning. I am pretty much my own boss so it requires reworking things.
I think it’s important, however, to take time off. I could easily keep going on day after day, week after week. But if I don’t allow myself time away to recharge, I will be doing myself a disservice.
Do you plan on taking a day off for Thanksgiving? How do you manage to get time off when you work from home?
