Summer is here… a time when millions of families head to the sun, sand, and surf. And along with the sunscreen, water and towels most will tote along their cameras to capture the sun-filled memories of children splashing in waves or building monster sand castles.
Only not every shutterbug readily whips out his or her camera in the heat of the moment for fear that the elements (water, sand, etc.) will damage their expensive digital devices. Meanwhile, others simply forget that their cameras are sitting in their beach bags waiting to be used.
As you head out on your family trip to the beach this summer consider that you are visiting a place that provides a naturally beautiful canvas and yields spectacular shots. If you are looking for some inspiration take a look at these tips:
CANDID SHOTS
If you have young children then you know how easy it is for them to get immersed in a beach activity. Whether it’s making footprints in the sand, building a sand fort or splashing around in the whitewash, grab your camera and capture candid shots of your family simply enjoying all the beach has to offer.
ZOOM
Employ your camera’s macro shooting mode to shoot small details such as a footprint in the sand or a seashell or bright piece of glass that has washed to shore.
ACTION SHOTS
My daughter doesn’t stop running from the moment she hits the sand. Be sure to capture the action while it happens by choosing the right modes on your digital camera. Look for the “Action” shooting mode, which uses a fast shutter speed to freeze a moment so you can get a clear shot. Or use the “Burst” mode, which allows you to take multiple pictures with one click of the shutter button. This mode is ideal for catching a sequence of shots.
