Talk to Your Kids About Voting

It’s the week of the big election. In just a few days we will find out who will lead our country for the next four years. The fate of our country is in our hands. Have you talked to your children about the importance of exercising your right to vote? For most of us it will be many years before our children are old enough to vote, but if you start talking to them about it now, they may begin to realize the importance of it.

I have been amazed at the things children are hearing about the election right now. As I have been in the schools I have heard children arguing with each other about who should or should not be our next president. They hear things from their parents or on the news and are starting to formulate their opinions about the candidates based on what they have heard around them. It’s amazing how heated these children can be, even at such a young age. This is why it is important to talk about the things that are going on in our country. Like it or not, our kids will be affected by it.

As election day is approaching, be sure to get out there and exercise your rights as a citizen of the United States. Talk to your kids about why you are voting. You may even want to take them with you so that they can see how the whole process works. If you don’t know enough about the candidates to form an opinion, spend a half an hour before you go and do a little research on where they stand on issues that are important to you. As much as you may hate politics, there’s bound to be at least one issue that you feel passionate about. See what each has to offer and make the best decision that you can make for your children. Their future is at stake here too.
