In my last blog I talked about the conference call I participated in with Bob Harper, trainer from the hit TV show “The Biggest Loser.” Bob is working in conjunction with Extra gum for the 3PM Snackdown Challenge. The idea behind this challenge is to put down the snack and instead, pick up a pack of Extra sugar-free gum. Replacing that craving for a sweet treat with a piece of five calorie sugar-free gum is a much healthier alternative.
When you go to the website you can enter to win a free training session with Bob Harper. The winner score a trip to the “The Biggest Loser” Resort – Fitness Ridge in Utah. Bob mentioned how he did this last year and it was so much fun working with the winning contestant.
In talking with Bob about healthy eating habits he strongly encouraged people to eat whole grains, fruits and vegetables. He also reiterated the importance of staying away from refined sugars and processed foods.
Bob also talked about the benefits of fiber which include: Reduces cholesterol, helps with digestion and makes you feel fuller longer. Soy was also discussed and he stated that it is fine in moderation; however, there are other options out there. Also Bob suggested we look for different ways to get our protein.
Bob also discussed fat. He expressed how we need fat because our brain is dependent on it. When he sees labels that say “fat-free” or “low-fat” a red flag goes up because that usually means they are full of sugar. In moderation, we can find good fat in coconut oil, olive oils, avocados and grape seed oil.
An interesting part of the conversation was when Bob told me about a caller who asked if there were any foods that he completely avoids. He stated that he never eats meat and has tried to hide his vegetarianism in the “The Biggest Loser” because it’s not the most relatable diet.
Finally, when it comes to snack temptations Bob says we have to reprogram ourselves. Instead of succumbing to that knee-jerk reaction to grab a bag of chips or eat that brownie, we need to put ourselves in a new setting. We have to set a new pattern of eating.
So for January 2010 we should make it a goal to set a new pattern of healthy eating. Take it day-by-day, meal-by-meal if necessary. Stay the course and in the end you will be well on your way to a healthier lifestyle!
