Teach for America is one method of recruiting teachers to work in some of the toughest schools in the United States. A part of Americorp, founded in 1989, Teach for America recruits college graduates who otherwise would not consider a career in teaching. Currently, 3500 corp members are teaching in over 1000 schools. There are over 10,000 alumni of the program.
College seniors and recent college grads are encouraged to apply. After completing a rigorous application process, prospective teachers are given training in teaching techniques, literacy training, instructional planning, classroom management, and diversity issues. The training period is brief, but intense. There is a program of ongoing maintenance, supervision, and support throughout the year. When possible, Teach for America first year teachers are placed in schools where program alumni are active.
There have been studies comparing various aspects of the candidates to teachers who undergo a more standard preparation. While the teachers lack the standard formal educational background, there has not been a negative effect on standardized tests in reading and math. The question is, can this continue to be a viable pool of candidates for school districts to draw upon, and will they stay on the job? The first two years of teaching are rough, and ongoing support and mentorship is vital.
The program is committed to addressing the educational inequity that plagues the United States – some areas have advantages, and some do not. By placing bright, motivated college educated people in our nations classrooms, people who can pursue other years but WANT to teach, and giving them the support needed to grow their skills, Teach for America is a resource for a solution to the problem facing districts which struggle to attract talent.
