Teaching the Gospel: Creating a Learning Environment

As a teacher of the gospel in your home or at church, it is important to create a learning atmosphere for your students. Often when you think about this you will begin thinking about classroom management strategies, such as having the children listen quietly or how you present the lesson. Before you do this it is important to think about the tone of the class. You need to create a place where everyone feels comfortable attending. You also need to have an atmosphere where the students are respectful of each other, and an atmosphere that encourages your students to pay attention to the class.

One of the most important ways that you can do this is by showing respect and love towards your students. If your students feel that you genuinely care about them, they will be more open to listening to your lessons. This is especially true of children and teenagers. If they feel that you don’t want to be there, then they will not want to be there either. Asking about their interests, and forming friendships can really help build rapport with your students.

It is also important that you create an atmosphere where the learning experience is a positive one. Students should feel comfortable making comments, and asking questions. If you are dealing with younger people, you need to make sure that no other students belittle them for their comments. If you are teaching adults, you need to find a way to tactfully correct wrong information, and bring the lesson back on track. Additionally you should always make sure to listen to the comment, and make eye contact with the speaker at least once during the comment.

Finally it is important to help your students to pay attention in class. Often this happens as soon as you set up. If you can have soft music playing in the background, and a reverent atmosphere, it is more likely to stay that way during the lesson. Additionally be prepared to teach and avoid reading from the manual.
