Teaching the Youth the Importance of Education

We are taught that while we can’t take any of our earthly possessions with us when we die, we can take our intelligence and our understanding with us as we progress past the veil. This knowledge has always inspired me to get a good education and to seek learning throughout my life.

We recently watched the education segment of the church’s “Brand New Year” DVD with our youth, and I loved many of the aspects of the video. We watched and then talked about education, and I was really impressed with the way the video taught the youth about the value of education.

Many church videos are filled with statements and testimonies from members around the world, and this was no exception. However, I loved how the video concentrated on one youth in particular and showed her dedication to schoolwork, her goals, and her spiritual learning. It showed the well-rounded education we all hope to give our kids.

I also appreciated how the video encouraged the youth to follow their dreams and to do their best as they go through school. I loved the inclusion of seminary in the curriculum and think fondly back to my own experiences in seminary. Seminary was where I solidified my beliefs and gained a firm foundation for my faith.

After the video, we talked about education and several of the young men and women in our meeting spoke out about the things they hope to accomplish in their lives. Whether they were spiritual or temporal goals, we were able to reinforce how education would promote and help them achieve those goals and responsibilities whether they were thinking of college, technical schools, apprenticeships, or some other type of education.

I value my education (both spiritual and temporal), and made the most of all the opportunities available to me. I still love learning a variety of things from anyone willing to teach me. I hope I always have that drive, and I hope that I pass that desire for education on to my children.
