Television News: March 23, 2008

One of my favorite shows has been cancelled…again. “Jericho” was cancelled by CBS after its first season due to viewer decline. Of course, the fact that CBS put the show on hiatus during the Christmas holidays didn’t help much. But rabid fans weren’t going to just let “Jericho” go peacefully. They sent over 40,000 pounds of nuts to CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler’s door. The nuts were a tribute to the line “Nuts” uttered by lead character Jake Green (Skeet Ulrich) in the season finale.

After the overwhelming response from fans, CBS decided to give the show a second, shorter season. However, the seven new episodes didn’t help raise the ratings any and now CBS has decided to cancel the show again.

However, the fact that fans of the show were able to bring it back, albeit briefly, was almost a miracle. Rarely does a show get a second life like this. It kind of gives me hope that maybe fans still have a little control over what gets put on television.

Meanwhile, over on the set of a show that seems as if it will never end, a woman is claiming that she was hurt. Orit Greenberg has said that she was injured when fans dashed for seats on the set of Oprah’s talk show in Chicago. Her lawyer is asking for $50,000, saying that Harpo Studios didn’t control the audience on December 5, 2006, when Greenberg was an audience member. When the audience members were told to sit wherever they wanted, Greenberg says she was pushed by the crowd then fell down a flight of stairs, which caused “severe and permanent injuries.” Shades of the 1979’s The Who concert!

I was a bit shocked when I read the Yahoo headline “Television’s History Channel is History.” As it turns out, the History Channel itself is not “history,” just the name. The “the” and “channel” titles have been dropped, so when you see it on television or referred to in media, it will simply be called History. Guess that doesn’t leave much doubt as to what it shows, huh?
