Temper Passion with Practicality

Letting passion be your guide in your home business operation can be a grand thing—for many of us, it is what gets us up in the morning and spurs us into taking chances. However, we’ve all known those individuals who are SO passionate that they forget to take reality into account. Sometimes, they are able to get by on passion and enthusiasm alone, but often they need someone to come along and do the practical stuff. As a small, one-person business, we don’t necessarily have a staff to cover for us and make sure all the details get done, so we have to temper our passion on our own, and keep one eye on the practical side of business too.

I don’t know about you, but I have a tendency to get all excited about something new, and overestimate my ability to actually have the time, energy, and resources to follow through. All that excitement can be for naught if I cannot come up with the time to work on the practical details of how to make something happen. The passion and excitement are so important as a motivator and the fire that builds a business, but I have also learned that it is often not enough—I need to be able to do the details and dirty work—the practical stuff—in order to turn the dream into reality.

We have to be careful of the reverse as well, not going with those passionate bursts because we are overwhelmed by the details. Some of us are more likely to march along the status quo because the practical details seem overwhelming. We don’t want to let ourselves dream because we are afraid we won’t be able to see the project to fruition. Instead of too much of any one side, balancing out our passionate dreams with the ability to be practical can be the best route for our home businesses.
