Each month we celebrate many well-known holidays and anniversaries, as well as some lesser known ones. Everyone knows that October is the month we celebrate Halloween and things that go bump in the night. But Halloween is not the only family celebration this month. I present to you my top 10 reasons for families to celebrate the month of October.
(1) The CD player made it debut this month. And although it might seem like they have been around for a long time, they actually went on the market on October 1, 1982. Today we can pick up a decent player for about $20. The cost in 1982? $625.
(2) Celebrate Eat Better, Eat Together Month. Research has shown that kids whose families eat together have better nutrition, do better in school and have fewer behavior problems.
(3) Disney World Opened on October 1, 1971.
(4) Celebrate National Go On A Field Trip Month. If your child’s school does not have any planned trips this month, why not plan your own?
(5) Celebrate National Popcorn Popping Month.
(6) Celebrate National Roller Skating Month.
(7) America’s first department store opened on October 16, 1868 in Salt Lake City, Utah. It was called ZCMI (Zion Co-operative Mercantile Institution).
(8) The first newspaper comic strip was published on October 18, 1896. It was called, “The Yellow Kid Takes A Hand at Golf” and ran in the New York Journal’s weekly supplement called the American Humorist.
(9) Celebrate National Knock Knock Day on October 31st.
and finally, this month we celebrate probably one of the greatest creations of all time and that’s, drum roll please,
(10) The creation of the Internet. On October 29, 1969 data flowed between computers at UCLA and Standford Research Institute. This was the beginning of ARPANET, which later became the Internet that we know and love today.
