Ten Ways to Memorialize Your Pet

  1. Hold a memorial service. Invite the people who love you and your pets to join you in reminiscing about your beloved friend. Friends and family members may want to help you plan the event.
  2. Create a special photo album or scrapbook to remember your lost pet. When you feel especially lonely, you can recall your special times together by paging through your scrapbook.
  3. Make a donation to your local shelter — or the shelter where you met your friend. Money is always welcomed by animal shelters and rescues, or you could choose to donate your pet’s favorite food, favorite treat, or some toys he would have liked.
  4. Write some sort of tribute to your pet: a story, a song, a poem, or even a eulogy.
  5. Create a special display with some of your pet’s special things. A shadowbox is a perfect place to display collars and ID tags, awards, and even a few favorite toys.
  6. Write a farewell letter to your pet. Tell them what you are feeling, what you will miss most, and what you loved most about them.
  7. Turn your pet’s ID tags into a charm for a bracelet, pendant for a necklace, decorative pin, or even a zipper pull.
  8. Purchase books on pet care, training, or dealing with the loss of a pet and donate them to your local library, school, or shelter. A label inside the front cover can tell everyone that the books were a gift from your beloved pet.
  9. Place a favorite picture in a special frame and display it in a special place — on your nightstand, on your desk at work, or over the fireplace. Friends and family who are grieving may appreciate a copy of the picture as a gift.
  10. Commission a portrait of your lost friend — many animal artists can create beautiful portraits from looking at a few snapshots.
