Two bucks?
Now you’re talking.
Great minds at the Greater Houston Convention and Visitors Bureau have come to the rescue of cash-strapped families visiting town on a budget. The group recently compiled a list of 33 attractions for $2 or less.
Some of the freebies include the Houston Arboretum & Nature Center, open daily, and the Sam Houston Boat Tour, which provides free 90-minute roundtrip cruises along the Houston Ship Channel.
Another attraction that won’t cost you a single cent to visit is the Miller Outdoor Theatre, which hosts free productions from March through October. During the month of August you can catch the Houston Shakespeare Festival’s “Julius Caesar” plus a screening of the classic William Powell and Myrna Loy comedy “The Thin Man.”
You won’t have to spend a dime at the Water Wall either. The 64-foot U-shaped fountain is Houston’s most photographed site and sits on three acres shaded by 180 oak trees. The family-friendly area is a great place to picnic, nap or simply let the kids run off some steam.
The Buffalo Bayou, located at 1113 Vine St., is another popular and very photo-friendly free Houston attraction. The area boasts a waterway with bridges, parks, walkways, views of the city skyline, and trails for canoeing, kayaking, hiking and biking.
Budget conscious art lovers can tour The ArtCar Museum for free on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and weekends. The offbeat museum, nicknamed the “Garage Mahal” houses “artfully constructed cars, low riders and mobile contraptions.”
With a couple bucks in hand you can head over to the Beer Can House. The colorful structure, which doubles as a folk art gallery, is decorated with 50,000 beer cans. Admission to the grounds is $2, but you can view it from the street for free.
You can access the entire list of cheap options by clicking here, looking for the “Plan A Visit” icon on the top left, then scrolling down to the “Two Dollars or Less” feature.
