Thanking Our Veterans

I don’t think I had even heard of Veteran’s Day until I was in high school, even then it wasn’t really discussed. I’m a little embarrassed to say I probably wouldn’t have remembered it this year either if it weren’t for the banks being closed tomorrow. This is something I’m not proud of. I want my son to know how important it is to remember our veterans and all they have sacrificed for us and our country.

Because Veteran’s Day is often overlooked in school, it is important to teach our children about it while they are at home. We are so blessed to live in a country where we get to experience such great freedoms each day. It is important to remember that there are still men and women out there fighting for us to keep those freedoms. They sacrifice time away from their families and put their lives on the line day in and day out. How blessed we are to have people who are so willing to go out and support our country.

With it being November we are often reminded of things we are grateful for. Take some time to talk to your children about how thankful you are for the troops and the freedoms we are so fortunate to be able to enjoy each day. You may even want to pull together a care package with some thank you cards to send out to the troops who are away from their families throughout the holiday season to help them know how thankful you are for them. It doesn’t have to be much. Little things like that can make a world of difference when you are away from home and missing the little luxuries. It also helps show your children how important they are and gives them a chance to serve others.
