I usually blog about deals, coupons, sales, and matching up coupons and rebates to stores. Today I want to tell you about Winn-Dixie – not about the money I saved shopping there but about the lives they helped to save by being a sponsor of the National Marathon to Finish Breast Cancer in Jacksonville, Florida.
Winn-Dixie, along with several other companies, was a sponsor of this event. At the expo before the run, they sent representatives from their pharmacy to check blood pressure and body mass index (BMI). I don’t know what they donated financially as a sponsor, but I do know that with their sponsorship, they gave a lot of support, encouragement, and nourishment to the runners of all types.
They donated fruit that was given to runners on the course and afterward. I have to tell you, after finishing just 5 miles of the relay, coming back to the runner’s village and getting some nice juicy fresh fruit was a real treat. Bottled water was readily available – I don’t know if they donated it or if another sponsor did.
There were several vendors there for healthy foods, including Cabot Dairy, who were promoting their new Greek Yogurt and low fat cheeses. Activwater was also a sponsor.
When we shop at large supermarkets and big box stores, we do so because of prices, quality, and availability of merchandise. But it is nice to know that these businesses support our communities. My local Publix supports many area events with food and publicity. Walmart does some fundraisers for school supplies, and donates many items. This time, Winn Dixie donated beyond the community they serve. The $800,000 raised in this marathon for breast cancer research will save lives and empower women. For many, the experience of running and becoming healthy itself is empowering.
I personally would like to thank Winn-Dixie for promoting the ongoing health of women, and healthy lifestyles. The simple act of doing routine blood pressure and BMI tests, and providing fresh fruit to thousands of runners was much appreciated.
