Thanksgiving Boredom Busters for Kids

Today was the last day of school for many kids in our area. Thanksgiving break is now officially underway. That’s great news for students, but for harried parents trying to prepare their homes for Turkey Day guests having a bunch of bored children underfoot can be a holiday nightmare.

If you are looking for ways to preserve your sanity while the kids are home next week, consider these fun Thanksgiving-themed activities that will yield hours of fun and some nifty holiday decorations in the process:

HOMEMADE INDIAN CORN

Materials:

Green and yellow construction paper

Scissors

Craft glue

Dried beans

Pencil

Directions:

Draw a picture of a corn on the cob on the yellow construction paper and the husk on the green paper, and then cut out the pieces.

Glue the corn piece onto the husk piece.

Cover the corn piece with a layer of glue, making sure to spread it into
an even layer.

Add the beans to the glue. (Younger children can just dump the corn on by the handful, while older children can place the beans individually to create more of a pretty pattern.)

Allow the glue to dry thoroughly before displaying the corn.

CHOCOLATE TURKEY

Ingredients:

Oreo cookies

Candy corn

M and M minis

Chocolate frosting

Mini Reese Peanut Butter Cups

Directions:

Cover an Oreo cookie with chocolate frosting. This will be the body of your turkey.

Place a miniature Reese Peanut Butter Cup on the edge of the turkey body leaving plenty of room for the feathers. This is the turkey’s head.

Attach about 4 or 5 candy corn with the small white ends closest to the head onto the turkey’s body. These are the feathers.

Add a little more frosting to the front of your turkey’s head, then place two M and M minis for eyes and a red M and M mini for the waddle.

Repeat until you’ve made a plateful of these sweet turkeys for your Thanksgiving Day guests.
