Thanksgiving: Giving Thanks a Little Early

Can’t You Almost Smell the Turkey?

It’s only more one week, or seven more days, or 168 hours, until Thanksgiving. Mere hours until we once again gather with people we love to celebrate another chance to show our appreciation for everything good in our lives.

I wanted to take a moment to share some of the things I’m thankful for, even though I’m giving my list a little early (I’ll be cooking on Thanksgiving!)

  • Being married to my best friend
  • Having four beautiful, healthy children
  • My mom, brother, and extended family
  • True friends
  • A comfortable home
  • Necessities met
  • My faith
  • Living in a free country
  • Writing for Families.com

This is the short list, off the top of my head and in no particular order. There are so many things that I’m thankful for, but these are some of the most important to me.

Here’s a poem I wrote some years ago for Thanksgiving:

Thanksgiving is the time of year
Happy ThanksgivingWhen people gather round
To share their future hopes
And blessings that abound

We feast on luscious foods
All lovingly prepared
But spending time with those we love
Cannot be compared

It’s very simple, but it describes my feelings well. The people in our lives cannot be replaced. While I’ll miss my mother-in-law and my dad during the holidays, I hope I’ll make sure to let all the people still with me know how much I cherish them. It’s so easy to get caught up in all the details that we can forget what’s really important.

So, before I get too busy with cleaning and cooking and baking, I wanted to take a moment to remember and to give thanks.

I hope all of you have an abundance of good things and wonderful people in your lives, and I hope you have a terrific Thanksgiving.
