Thanksgiving is here—make your shopping list!

Have you thought yet about what you’re going to serve for Thanksgiving—and about how much food you’ll actually need?

I think most people fall into two categories. Either they cook too much food or they cook too little food. I happen to fall into the first category, a trait I blame on my mother. With three kids who just happened to have monstrous teenaged appetites from about the age of five, she became a master at cooking well and cooking large. I will say, however, aside from being stuffed most of my adult life, I do think it’s better to cook to much than too little. The idea of someone walking away from my dinner table hungry is simply not an option for me. I say—it’s better to be over prepared than under prepared. And it’s better to fix a feast than to stage a famine.

When you’re making your Thanksgiving shopping list, you may want to include these items:

The turkey (can’t forget that one!)

A potato dish – you’ll need at least one. Mashed potatoes are classic. Sweet potatoes are, too. If you’re having a lot of people, you can make both if you choose. Otherwise, one is sufficient. Or consider a pasta dish. Macaroni and cheese (homemade) is a favorite of people young and old.

A vegetable dish – Is there anyone who doesn’t make green bean casserole? This year, why not try adding a new veggie to the bunch—maybe some sautéed Brussels sprouts with pancetta or try my Turkish green beans. Either way, you’ll need at least one vegetables to help your guests from rolling out the door at the end of the day.

Don’t forget the stuffing – stuffing is the prize of Thanksgiving for many people. Stuffing can be made a variety of ways. And surprisingly, it’s not that difficult.

Rolls – Everyone needs something to sop up the gravy!

Miscellaneous items – deviled eggs, a veggie tray, potato salad, and of course, lots of yummy desserts.

And don’t forget the cranberries! Canned or fresh, they’re a Thanksgiving table staple.

I hope this has helped spark some ideas for your own Thanksgiving meal. Happy Holidays!
