Thanksgiving Picture Cake

This photo project is a variation on a creation one of our playgroup moms made for her son’s birthday. The original project called for a cake to be decorated as a football field. The “players,” which top the cake, are made from photographs taken at the party. I tweaked the theme a bit and plan to bring this turkey inspired cake to our playgroup’s pre-Thanksgiving Day party next Tuesday.

Here’s what you’ll need:

· Sheet cake (you can bake one or by a standard sized one from your local supermarket or bakery)

· Brown construction paper

· Photos of each party guest

· Wooden Skewers or chopstick

· Clear Tape

Directions:

The day before the party either buy or bake a sheet cake and decorate it so it resembles a barnyard. All I’m planning to do is cover the entire cake with green and brown icing. Then, with additional pastry bags filled with different colored icings I will decorate the barnyard with pebbles, shrubs, and haystacks. I also plan to use plastic toy fencing I picked up at the dollar store and place it around the cake.

Next, get your child to trace his or her hand on brown construction paper to create mini turkeys to decorate the cake. Cut out the turkeys, decorate them with markers or other embellishments and place them aside.

On the day of the party, pack up the cake and your digital camera. Once you are at the party take individual headshots of each guest (for my cake I’m limiting the pictures to children only).

Print your photos. If you are not going to a home that has a photo printer you can take the pictures ahead of time and create your photo turkeys at home.

To complete the photo turkeys simply cut out each picture and tape it to your construction paper bird. Then, tape each completed turkey to a wooden skewer or chopstick.

Finally, once you’ve created all of the photo turkeys place them into the cake to make it look like they are running around on a farm.
